Using hashtags and Twitter… a crash course

January 4, 2010

After “Where do I sign up?” the second most asked-question I’ve received lately about the Bible in 90 Days Challenge has been “How do I use Twitter and what is a hashtag?”

Okay, so that was really two questions, but you get the idea.

And seeing as tonight is our first Bible in 90 Days Tweet-Up as readers, I thought it was time to share the big secret…

So, if you haven’t signed up on Twitter yet, click this link to create an account and follow me.

Once you’ve done that, I would suggest you download TweetDeck, a free Twitter application. Yes, I am sure there are other applications out there, but that is the one I use and can share with you how to use.

Once you’ve downloaded it and installed it, look for a tweet in one of your columns that has this in it: #B90Days

(If you aren’t following anyone yet, you won’t have any tweets yet. Follow me by visiting www.Twitter.com/Momstoolbox to set up your own account, follow me and you’ll definitely have a few #B90Days tweets to click in TweetDeck. Then you’ll find a bunch of others you’ll want to follow, as well.)

That pound sign is also called a hashtag and in Twitter-speak, the letters behind the hashtag are also considered a hashtag. (So the hashtag I have been referring to in other posts is this whole string : #B90Days)

Once you’ve located a tweet with that in it, click on #B90Days and a new column will open up in TweetDeck which lists all the tweets with that hashtag in it, whether you are following the authors or not.

You can send a tweet by clicking in the long box at the top of your screen that says “What’s happening?”and typing your tweet of 140 characters or less. Include #B90Days somewhere in your tweet for it to be seen by all the rest of the Bible in 90 Days community. Then hit “Send” at the bottom right of the text block… and you will have joined the conversation!!

Hope this helps! Give it a try before tonight so you’ll be ready to Tweet-Up with us from 8-9 CST. I am looking forward to hearing/ reading your thoughts about the challenge so far. See ya there, my new Twitter friend!

I’ve failed miserably with my Bible reading plan for a while now. I was following a read your Bible in a year plan and doing good until about April. Then I gave up and I’ve just been reading haphazardly. I had heard about the 90 plan before and was intrigued. I think now is the time for me to give it a go.

This tweetdeck (which I’m very unfamiliar with) it won’t become my wallpaper or anything right? Just a little button. I want to join the 90 Day challenge but not so sure about the tweetdeck. Any insight will be helpful. I’m not big on downloading things I don’t know about =)
Maybe I’ll as my dh for help.
Blessings & thank you for the 90 Day Challenge,
Linda<

I prefer tweetgrid for twitter chats/ parties. I have to admit, I am happy the chat is at 8 CST because that is 9 my time and an easier time to be on the computer.

Thank you for the help! I was feeling like the Lone Ranger — like I was the only one who didn’t know anything about tweeting. For those of us who have conflicts on Monday night, is there a way for us to peruse “the archives” of the conversation?

I’m thinking we can use TweetChat.com for this too. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Then there’s no worry about remembering or forgetting the hashtag because the hashtag becomes a chat room & is automatically added to your Tweets. These Tweets show up in your Twitter stream, but you don’t see anything but your chat room in Tweetchat.

Thanks for the input here! Sounds like TweetChat works well, too! –MomMy ComLuv Profile
