Bible in 90 Days: Day 11 Check-in

January 11, 2010

If you are participating in the Bible in 90 Days challenge, today you are on Day 11 and should have read through the end of page 132 in the Bible in 90 Days Bible or through Numbers 21:7.

The following is a guest post from my sister-in-law, Toni, who blogs at The Happy Housewife.

The Happy Housewife plan for Reading the Bible in 90 Days

In order to succeed at reading through the entire Bible in 90 days I knew I needed to come up with a plan. It is pretty basic, but it works!

First, get a Bible bag, basket, tote, container, just something that is portable. My bag contains my 90 Day Bible, a notebook, another book I am reading for Bible study, 2 highlighters and a pen. This bag goes with me up and down the stairs, to church, and to appointments. Whenever I have a spare moment I pick up the Bible and read a page or two. Not only does this help me keep up with the reading, when my children see me I am reading the Bible!

Second, when I read I always have a highlighter in my hand. When I come across a passage I don’t understand, or I want to study further I highlight it. I also highlight my favorite verses or meaningful passages. When I finish the 90 Day challenge my plan is to go back through the Bible and study these passages. By highlighting I don’t get stuck in a certain portion of scripture and fall behind in my reading.

I have really enjoyed the Bible in 90 Days challenge. One thing that stands out to me is the big picture that is unfolding almost daily. When I read through Leviticus I can’t help but think,

“Thank you Lord for sending your son Jesus to die for our sins! I could never keep up with all those laws and sacrifices! Thank you for providing the perfect sacrifice!

I find that each day I look forward to picking up my Bible and reading those twelve pages. While many of these passages are not unfamiliar to me, many times I feel like I am reading them for the first time. I am excited to see God’s plan for all who are taking part in this challenge.

Thanks, Toni, for the tips on how you are reading through the Bible in 90 days with us!

Aside from blogging as The Happy Housewife, Toni is a Navy wife and a homeschooling mom of 7 incredible children. And, as she mentioned, I am honored to be her sister-in-law.

So… How about you? How are you getting your reading done? And how far along are you?

Did you make time yet to listen to Jack Modesett Jr.’s week 2 audio message? Did anything stand out in that message for you?

If you are a blogger, please link up a weekly check in post from your own blog on the MckLinky and link your own post back to this one. Please encourage your readers to check in here, as well, so we can all see who is still in the challenge with us and pray for each other by name. I am on schedule for my Bible reading. However, I hope to finish a few days early. I want to have read the all the Bible before my 50th birthday in late March. I can not think of a better birthday gift for myself that to have read the Bible in a little less than 90 days.

2 Michelle January 12, 2010 at 8:37 pm

I am caught up. I have been pleased at how well it has been going. I was a little worried I would not be able to do this, but so far so good. I am amazed at how much more sense some things seem to make when you read them together or within a short period of time rather than many days apart. I feel like I have gained so much more understanding by reading the Bible this way rather than with a Bible Study plan or even with a Bible in a Year plan. This has been a wonderful journey so far, and I look forward to the rest.

I am right on track…but I had to chuckle when the guest poster said to highlight parts of scripture that you don’t quite understand….my entire book of Leviticus and Numbers would be highlighted!!!

I’m so excited to see all these comments and know so many others are reading the same things I am. I love Wanda’s suggestion to pray when I get sleepy. I’m staying up late to hear and I’m tired during the day. I agree with Valerie that the audio helps especially with the names and helps me keep focused as I read along. I’m going to try Marilee’s suggestion to read 2/3 and then only the last 1/3 at night and that should help.

I’m currently one day behind.

I am all caught up and amazed that I haven’t gotten behind. I still haven’t done my blog post but will link up when I get it done. Thanks for doing this Amy! I’m totally psyched that I’ve done 11 days straight through… :)

I am behind…I’m partway through day 8… I make good progress on the weekends, but fall behind during the week… Will be trying Toni’s bag idea and will do my best to catch up… Loving the challenge!

thanks to toni, i found out about this 90-day plan and i am on track! i do a lot of reading and listening at the same time- or i will listen while doing laundry/cleaning up after dinner and then go back and look over it to make sure i got it all. whew those 2 l-o-o-o-o-n-g chapters in numbers on day 10 were tough ;)

I am a bit behind, but I know I will catch up within a day or two. In fact, I plan to go snuggle in bed and get caught up pretty soon. Can you believe the bible I misplaced on day 3-4 is still missing somewhere in my house? I think a certain 4 year old took it, because it has really neat pictures…. There are definite blessings to having more than one bible in the house.

I am on track as of today anyway. I have been a half of a day off (on and off) this week,

10 PaulaK January 11, 2010 at 10:15 pm

I’m all caught up and thoroughly enjoying this experience. I can’t believe all I’ve learned and am happy I’m still excited to do this! I work 12 hour days so on my days off I read a few pages ahead so on the days I work it’s not quite so much to read. This plan is working very well for me.

11 Kelly January 11, 2010 at 9:55 pm

I’m up to date & still going strong!
I’m so excited that I haven’t gotten overwhelmed or “fizzled out” so far. And I tell myself every day that I’m not gonna.

I am loving spending so much time in His Word. I can feel myself changing from the inside out, and it is so exciting, humbling and (I must admit) a little frightening (at times).

12 Tiffany K January 11, 2010 at 9:54 pm

I’m half a day behind. should catch up tonight! I’m having some trouble understanding Leviticus and how it fits into my faith. However, I’m hoping that after reading the whole Bible I’ll see how everything fits together better.

Amy Reply:

A lot of people have questions here. Stick with it and it will all come together. :) I’ve just prayed for your understanding in perfect time.

I am right on track. It has been so great to read straight through. God is already teaching me a lot about who He is!

My husband and I are both caught up – we recently discovered that we are getting more out of the reading by listening to the audio while reading along.

Neither of us have ever read the bible cover to cover before. We have found ourselves anxious to find out what the next “drama” will be. It started out almost like a soap opera of sorts!

I totally agree thank goodness we don’t have to keep all of those laws and sacrifices straight – I would have never made it. Also I am surprised that family members have made the comment that you can’t read the bible in 90 days! All the more reason – that I will read the bible in 90 days!!!! Thanks for providing this! A month ago I wouldn’t have seen me or my husband doing this together!!!! It is exciting!

Amy Reply:

This is fantastic! I’m so glad you are enjoying it together! And listening while reading is a great tool to keep you focused.
Just prayed for you.

I will finish Day 12 tonight as well. I am trying to stay ahead a bit just in case I miss a night. I am reading in my free time at work and a while before bed everynight and in between when my baby is napping :) I am thoroughly enjoying this experience! Thanks for keeping us accountable :)

I like the highlighter idea. I was afraid to highlight in my Bible; are certain brands better for the thin pages than others?

I use a highlighter I bought at a Christian bookstore that is made for Bibles and won’t bleed through. Someone mentioned on Twitter last night that Sharpie makes a highlighter that doesn’t bleed, as well.

I’ll finish Day 12 tonight. I was a little more ahead, but last week I ended up working extra (early) hours and found out that a dear friend died unexpectedly. She was only 32. This week, I’ll try to keep up, but know it will be difficult as I’ll be making the 400 mile trip home for the funeral. I am enjoying this reading and so glad I’ve kept up so far. My kids are great encouragers!

18 Bessers January 11, 2010 at 7:53 pm

I have about 3 pages to go tonight then I’ll be caught up. My local Bible study starts up tomorrow and has homework, so this week could be a challenge keeping up with both. I’m a stay-at-home mom of a 2 and 4 year old. This challenge is helping me find all the previously wasted bits of time throughout the day.

19 Lindsey January 11, 2010 at 7:16 pm

I’m right on track… I know that I’ve read the passages before but I love how the Lord is speaking through them this time as I read!

20 Nancy January 11, 2010 at 6:31 pm

I am still a little bit ahead of schedule. Trying to build in a little buffer for some known challenges coming up.

21 Cher January 11, 2010 at 5:41 pm

I’ve got 2 more chapters to go for today, I decided after falling asleep for the 4th time on the same chapter of Numbers that I NEEDED a nap. I’ll be able to finish and be up to date after the kids are in bed tonight.

I am really proud of myself for keeping up with the reading and even more for keeping my head in this experience. I am not one to stick to reading if it isn’t “required”. I did fall 2 days behind but I got caught up lastnight. I do have todays reading to do but will do that tonight. I am finding that my best opportunity to read and really concentrate is at night after my children are in bed. This challenge is starting more conversations with my 3 year old and we have started reading her children’s bible together at night before she goes to bed. I am really loving this experience and can’t wait to read more! Thanks so much for this opportunity to read along with everyone!

I am amazed that I actually look forward to ready my few 12 pages each day! I know that will shock a few people, but the Bible is so darn interesting and it has brought back memories of things that I learned when I was VERY VERY young… the lessons were in my brain I just had to get them up front. I’m liking this adventure.

25 Sarah M January 11, 2010 at 3:46 pm

I’m behind…but after reading through the comments I realize that the biggest goal of all this is to read the entire Bible, even if I don’t make it in 90 days. So I’m going to keep at it and do my best!!

26 Marie January 11, 2010 at 3:15 pm

I’m all caught up too….except for today’s reading which I will get to ASAP. Hope to catch up with you all on the chat tonight…tried to participate last week, but I don’t think that my messages were getting through. I’m a newbie to Twitter…I’ll give it another shot tonight!

I was about half a day behind from Thursday thru Sunday, but I found the time to stay as caught up as I could despite all the chaos around here.

I was actually surprised to discover that I was half way thru today’s reading as of last night.

Leviticus was a hard read. Aside from all the regulations, it was very repetitious. I started reading it to my kids, but essentially ended up reading most of it to myself.

I’m learning to read a little bit here and there, which really helps. I love the highlighting tip – great idea!

Hi Amy! Just checking in to let you know that David and I are still reading, still “on target,” and still loving reading through the Bible at this pace! :)

34 Jen C January 11, 2010 at 12:16 pm

I am partially through today’s reading, and plan to finish while the little ones are asleep. I would like to listen to the audio lessons sometime this week. I am so excited I am keeping up, and look forward to reading each day, even as I trudged through Numbers:)

35 Merrilee January 11, 2010 at 12:11 pm

I am basically on track. I have read halfway through today’s reading. It went a little slower this morning, but only because my 6-year old wanted me to read out loud to her. How can I turn that down?
It has been working if I read the first 2/3 in the morning, then I can easily read the last portion before I go to bed.
I haven’t listened to the audio/video messages at all, but I am thankful that I am able to stay caught up right now.

I joined the challenge and thank God that I found it. As long as I’ve walked with Christ I have never read the Bible for an hour a day. OK, back in Bible College 35 years ago. I have been listening to the audio on BibleGateway.com as I read each day. It is the combination of visual and audio that reinforce each other. Just the audio gives your eyes and hands ability to wander but both keep me from skimming over parts I don’t understand or names I can’t pronounce. This engages me in a way that is not distracted by my wandering thoughts. Thanks to both your site and the audio, and most of all God Himself!

My daughter and I are right on schedule. It is such a blessing to be able to discuss with her what we read for the day. My husband and one of my other daughters are doing their own reading together, since they are slow readers and don’t feel they could keep up with this. So we are having good discussions all around.

Awesome! So glad to hear it!
Just said a prayer for all of you. How fantastic that all of you are engaged in reading the Bible! :)

42 Wanda January 11, 2010 at 11:15 am

I just started on January 6. However, despite getting really drowsy while reading (day or night), I have kept up. This is really a challenge for me, but it’s absolutely no challenge for God. When I start to get sleepy, I just talk to God and ask Him to help me stay awake and alert and He is faithful!!! Today I got so involved, I read a couple of chapters ahead. Incidentally, I place a little pencil dot mark next to verses I want to go back and look at a liitle closer and also write in pencil “quick” comments so that I’m able to continue the reading without significant interruption. I’ve also used my PDA to read the Bible while “waiting” at the doctor’s office.
Thank you very much and God’s blessing to you for this encouraging site!!! I’m going to try to get a little bit more technical in order to use some of the other features.

Amy Reply:

It sounds like you are doing really well, Wanda!
I’m so glad you’ve found a few systems that work for you and that you are really reading all of God’s Word with us.
You can catch up, as I was just telling Sandra.
I’m off to go pray for you, too…

I’m a few days behind because I just started when everyone else was on Day 7. I’m trying to see if I can catchp up with everyone else but if I don’t, I’ll just try and finish a few days after everyone else. Either way, I know I’ll be blessed to have read the bible cover to cover. Love the concept and enjoy reading everyone’s progress. Reading large portions of the bible is helping me with the daily devo I’m going through this year as well.

Blessings,
Sandra
