Bible in 90 Days: Please don’t give up

Just a warning: There will be some tough love in this post. But it’s really in here for your own good. Or for your fellow readers’ good. Okay, here goes:

I know this isn’t Monday so it isn’t time for a check-in post, but I still feel compelled to ask: How is your reading coming along?

For some of you, you are cruising along, having the time of your life, feeling inspired at every turn.

Others of you are plowing through, making changes in your schedule and staying on track.

A few of you are also plowing along, loving it, but feeling a little behind here and there.

And then there are some of you who feel as though you are so behind that there may not be any hope in finishing with the rest of us Easter week.

If you are in the last group you may start to wonder if you should even try to catch up. You might start justifying stopping by saying “I’m reading more of the Bible than I have, so I’ll just switch to the one-year plan,” Or, ” I’ll pick back up in a few days and finish in 110. Nothing lost if I do that. I’m spending more time in the Word, so that’s okay, right?”

To this I say “No, it is not okay. ” (I warned you about the tough love.)

When you decided that you wanted to jump in and join us in this challenge, you did it for a reason. And that was because you wanted to commit yourself to read, attentively, every word of the Bible in 90 days with the rest of us. You likely also had a reason why you wanted that.

I’d like for you to think back on why you wanted to read every word of the Bible in 90 days. Write it down.  And let’s make that happen. Together.

We don’t have face-to-face meetings as most 90-day reading groups have, so it’s a bit of a challenge for me to encourage every single one of you individually. But every single one of you is important to me. And as a group we can encourage each other to get it done.

If you fall out of the group, you will lose the rest of your team praying for you and cheering for you. And you’ll lose the accountability factor which definitely leads to success in this program.

If you stop  now, it is quite likely you will not pick back up again. And it is very likely you will not finish.

And I want you to finish. For you.

So what can I do to help? And what can the rest of our community of readers do to help? Please leave a comment with why you are struggling or how we can pray for you. And I’ll do whatever I can to help you succeed.

For those that aren’t behind, or aren’t in danger of slipping too far back, I have a few questions for you:

1. Why did you decide to read the Bible in 90 days and why are you sticking to it?

2. Have you seen any change in your life as a result of this commitment? If so, what?

Please, whether you are behind, on schedule, or ahead, consider leaving a comment that might help someone else who  needs it. And if you are a blogger and would like to write a post on your own blog and leave the link in the comments, you are welcome to do that… Just leave us a quick answer along with your link.

And, as always, please feel free to email me anytime using the green button on my sidebar.

I really love each of you and want to celebrate Easter with all of you after having read the entire Bible together.  You CAN do it!

  1. I soo needed your encouragement. I grounded myself from the computer for one week so I could catch up, yet it would either be my luck or the devils jealously that 2 of my children are in the doctors office and I myself become ill. None the less I am now only one book behind on my reading but several days behind on my blog, go figure…..I will NOT quit!!!

  2. When this post came out Wednesday I hadn’t done the days reading. And it was 11 at night! I only managed to get half of it done before falling asleep. I have to admit to having a really hard time with the reading…there’s so much murder and mayhem…I usually try to avoid reading stuff like that.
It feels like a whole lot of things were going on this past week that just had me off track…dd2 having a minor surgery, a bad case of bursitis in my knee, an argument with dh, ds15 having some issues at school. I couldn’t seem to open my bible. And yet your post kept coming to the forefront of my mind. Friday passed with some not so great personal health news. I just felt kind of shut down….but…I got up this morning and read your post again. I pulled out my bible and am now all caught up! I very much appreciate your encouraging posts and seeing everyone elses Tweets saying they’ve done their reading because it is keeping me motivated when I’ve thought about quitting.

I am late in replying to this post because I was behind in my Bible reading. I actually try not to read Amy’s posts/SOAPs until after I have read the passage myself. I want to be sure I give myself a chance to hear God speaking to me instead of just taking what Amy read. That’s not to stay I don’t appreciate & hear God through Amy’s sharing though, I do!

I decided to read the Bible in 90 days because I too have been a Christian for most of my life & have yet to read the Bible all the way through. I want to make sure that I have that clear picture from beginning to end of what God has done & continues to do.

I have been sick this past week & haven’t been taking the time to apply. However, when I get up earlier & read and pray and think about God’s word & what he is saying to me, then I see it influencing my actions during the day more – praying more, meditating on scripture, etc. It has also been really cool because I have been reading through the “Read with Me” bible that Bible in 90 days recommends for my 6-year old. I am able to add more details to the story to help her understand it better.

Like I said, I have been behind a couple days. So, I got an unexpected 15 minutes to myself & pulled out my cell phone & pulled up the reading on Bible Gateway. Then this morning, Saturday, I stayed in bed until I had caught up until today. This is generally what I have done if I get behind. On Saturday morning, I let the kids watch cartoons so I can get caught up.

I am only one day behind! Yeah! Just because I had lots of company staying at my house two weekends ago. :) So, hopefully during a naptime this week can get caught up! I found Judges to be so interesting! I am glad that I am doing this!

I decided to read the Bible in 90 Days because I have never read the entire Bible. My stepson asked many questions in November as he (8 years old) was trying to read by himself at his moms house, they are not very good Christian people but he was reading through Exodus after hearing about Moses at church with me and his father. My life has changed in that I have something new to talk about with people at work with family and with friends I am always asking their opinion and questions that I come across I can’t find the answer to. I love it!

  6. I, too, am a few days behind, but am determined to finish by Easter. Like Cyn, I get bogged down by wanting further explanation on some passages I just don’t fully comprehend or, quite honestly, that just seem so harsh. It has helped me to refer to a commentary, at times, to give me the background and insight I need to move on. I will say that reading the Bible at this pace is incredible, and I have developed a deep sense of awe and reverence for our mighty God.

  7. […] days. It pains me to even type those words! But I am not at all considering giving up thanks to Amy and her tough love. And thanks to all the wonderfully encouraging women on Twitter who remind me every day why I am […]

  8. Amy,

As usual, you have such a great sense of your group. Clearly you are giving needed encouragement to those who are teetering… and a little tough love, too.

I’d encourage everyone to think of this reading as an analogy to your daily walk:

    * Sometimes it is easier than others
    * Sometimes we feel closer to Him than at other times
    * Sometimes the leading is clear and we follow
    * Sometimes the leading is clear; nevertheless we sprint the other way.

IF you’ll keep this up, you’ll reap MORE BENEFITS than you’ll ever know. It is NOT just about KNOWLEDGE or KEEPING A COMMITMENT or MODELING FOR OTHERS or DEVELOPING A SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE or BECOMING CLOSER TO YOUR MAKER or finally RECEIVING THE GIFT OF GOD’s WORD. You’ll benefit in all of these ways, and MANY MORE.

    If you are struggling:

    * Pray
    * Read SEVERAL TIMES during the day rather than all at once
    * LISTEN while you read (www.biblein90days.org)
    * Read aloud to yourself or a reading buddy
    * Pray again

He will NOT let you fail, but He WILL challenge you.

    We’re here to help.

    Blessings,
    Ted

  9. I’ve written my answers at my blog, but basically, I started because I needed to be held accountable for my study time. I’m sticking with it because my priority to be grow in my relationship with Jesus.

I have found that through Jesus I am a little calmer and more equipped to handle the people I work with-most are nonbelievers.

I’m praying for all of us!

  10. I am behind. Like super behind. I am pretty much as behind as Andie is and it was a slight temptation to give up but then I decided to reflect for a while on why I am so far behind. I have always wanted to read all the way through the Bible…I’ve been trying since I was about 10 years old and never had any success. I’m even a teacher (currently on disability though) in a Catholic school but still, I really only knew the New Testament really well and then parts of the Old. I don’t feel like I should even be claiming to be a Christian much less a teacher of religion without knowing the Bible through and through FOR MYSELF (not just the parts the church highlights to us). My problem with the reading isn’t time – it has been focus. You see, as I read I find myself really wanting to talk to someone about it…to ask questions about parts of it and not being able to do that has hindered me. Yes, I could post on a blog but really, I worry about doing that. I tend to be, ummm, a bit of a rebel, maybe irreverant to a degree. It’s not that I don’t love God, it’s not that I am not a believer, but I have lots of questions about what I read and well, to be honest, I am not always happy about what I read. I BELIEVE there are explanations behind what I’m reading that would help me understand and feel comfortable with it but truly, I think if I stated my real feelings on some of it, I would get attacked. I am still working on this challenge and I have found that writing about what I have read, using the SOAP method has helped me to focus more – esp to focus more on what’s the main importance behind what I’ve read. My questions still exist but doing that writing has helped me to glean what really matters and to put those questions on the back burner for now.

  11. Literally, just before you posted this I was thinking to myself, “I’m still going to finish this challenge.” I’m very very behind, just now reading Exodus 1, but I WILL do it.

Thanks for the encouragement. Here’s how I’m going to catch up:

  12. I’m a victim of my own analness (is that even a word?). I started out 7 days behind and was plowing my way through the Rainbow NIV bible and then I received a 25% off coupon to the Family Christian store and just had to pick up the 90 day bible which has been a tremendous help. My only problem is that due to my analness, I wanted to start over using the 90 day bible and it took EVERYTHING in me not to. I’m still a few days behind but am determined (LORD help me) to be caught up when I check in this coming Monday. I’ve had to neglect the daily devotional I had started at the beginning of the year and blogging daily, of course but I know that is something I can start up again once I’m caught up with everyone else. Thanking for praying for me and I am ever so grateful for your commitment to do this for us.

  14. I am up to date on my reading…..though it has not been easy. I have found that over the last three days, I haven’t taken the time to journal about my reading (which I will pick back up in the morning).

I chose to accept the challenge of reading through the bible in 90 days because I wanted an appointment with the Lord each morning, and I wanted to KNOW His Word for myself….not just through someone else’s written bible study.

Thank you, Amy, for continuing to encourage us. I will rejoice with you on Easter!!

  15. Still behind and you are looking in my window again. I was thinking that exact stuff today (ie: “one year reading would be a piece of cake compared to this.” “I shouldn’t have started in the first place – what was I thinking?” Thanks for the tough love. I needed it. It makes me say, “You know, that’s true.” I need to stop the pity party :-) and “just do it”. I started because I wanted the challenge and I like things fast paced. I figured I can do anything for only 3 months. Well, it’s tougher than I expected but letting other things go for now has really helped.

My prayer would be for my ability to stay focused and read. I’m not a long winded reader :-) I usually just read a short article or skim long ones. I never sit still long enough to read a book.

Just tonight as I was reading I was thinking “Oh, so that’s how that story ties in with that one. I LOVE getting the whole picture in such a short time. Although I’ve read the whole thing before, it took two years and you forget how it all goes together when you read at that pace compared to the 90 days.

    Thank you so much!

Thank you for all of those of you praying for those of us that are behind.

  16. I am so glad I came across this challenge on Twitter. I saw someone Tweet about B90days and I had to check it out. I didn’t know what it was about, but I was intrigued by it for some reason.

    Bible in 90 days…

Apparently God had a plan for me!

I have never read the Bible. I have believed in God but was not raised going to church. This was my chance to learn about God and the Bible.

I’m the kind of person that loves a challenge so this was the perfect way for me to do it! I have stayed on track with the reading and refuse to fall behind. If that means staying up until 2 AM, that’s what I do. I typically read here and there during the day, and then finish up what’s left at bedtime.

I have learned so much so far and can’t wait to learn even more!

Thanks so much for all the support!

  17. Why did you decide to read? I want (1) to develop personal and close relationship with God. (2) to have faith (3) to build the habit of reading God’s word every day.

Have you seen any change in your life? Our reading makes me realized how holy and powerful our God really is – makes me approach Him (in prayer) and worship Him with more reverence and respect.

I read on schedule. I don’t want to read ahead because one time I’ am ahead, I got lazy reading the next 2 days. Then I end up behind. And I have to force myself to start reading again.

Most of the time I read aloud to keep my focus on reading.

Sometimes, I also read aloud along with audio, esp for long series of difficult to read names. I enjoy reading them. I got a kick of pronouncing them right.

  18. I am on track and I am enjoying this so much. I look forward to finishing this right on schedule.

    ~Amber

  19. I also got a couple of days behind, found myself justifying that they were the grace days and decided I was getting slack. So I got myself caught up and am feeling much better. You should not cut yourself any slack, too easy to let that take over.
I also agree with Somebody’s Mimi, I started reading the Bible like any other book and it has held so much more interest too me. I think sometimes we do get hung up on the “it’s the Bible and so tough” thought that we become intimidated (or horror of horrors-bored with) by it. Kinda like when I was in school and how I felt about text books. This challenge has really helped me change my perspective. :)

  20. My husband and I are both on track. We skipped one day and said we would never do that again, as it was hard to get caught up, but we knew if we didn’t we would be in trouble.

Again, I love to read along with the audio on http://www.biblein90days.org This has helped me to digest it all a bit more and to pay attention.

My husband and I try to read together, but if the schedule doesn’t allow, he takes the bible to work and I stay home with my bible and listen to the readings as I read along.

I have seen the hand of God in many ways, and often wonder if different things are happening due to God.

I am starting a ministry at church and it seems like I am so energized as I read the bible. More so than I was before.

Thank you again for suggesting this to me! God Bless!

  21. I decided to do this because I have wanted to read the bible through for a very long time. Honestly, a year is too long for me to stick with a plan. 3 months is something I can truly commit to.
I am the stay-at-home mom of 3 young boys – ages almost 5 (next week!), 2 1/2, and 4 months. So, fitting reading in daily has been a challenge. By God’s grace, I have stayed up to date. Yesterday is the first day that I did not complete the day’s reading on the assigned day. But, I finished yesterday’s during nap time today and am about to complete today’s. For me, it is about sacrificing what I really want to do (take a nap) and focus on completing the challenge I signed up for – reading God’s word daily.
Like a previous commenter, I do feel that my days go better. I am more patient. I am more focused with my time. My house is neater, I spend more time with my boys and less time is wasted away. There are times I would rather do something else, but I am never disappointed with my time in the word.
Ok, off to finish day 20’s reading.

I am on schedule with my Bible reading. I have tried many times in the past to read the entire Bible through, but I did not finish. When I saw this challenge, I knew I had to try. One reason I have always wanted to read the entire Bible from cover to cover and this plan was different. The second reason is my birthday is at the end of March, I want to finish reading the Bible from cover to cover on my birthday!!!

I have been amazed how God has spoken to me through His word. Even in Leviticus and Numbers.

Thanks for you hard work and most of all your encouragement, even in the form of tough love.

  23. I’ve been able to stay caught up throughout this whole time so far, but this past week I got a couple days behind… I learned then that I can NOT let myself get behind because those thoughts of “well I’m too far behind to catch up” just start creeping in. So now I’m more determined than ever to stay caught up! I love seeing that we’ve read 1/5 of the Bible so far! I’ve already learned so much from the readings, I am SO excited to see what else I will learn in the days to come! :) Come on ladies, we can do this!! XOXO

  24. I am currently up to date. But there has been more than once so far when I was behind. At the moment all bets are off for tomorrow. Thursdays are difficult for me because I am out of town that day and when I get home I am exhausted. Sundays are also difficult because our schedule is packed with church activities.

When I first heard about the 90 Day challenge I did not jump right into it. I was quite hesitant. But it sounded interesting. I’ve tried reading the Bible through in a year several times before – unsuccessfully. Typically, I get into February or March and someone wants me to join in another Bible study. If I commit to it, then I don’t have time for both and lose focus on the Bible in a year part and end up dropping that one. This time before I committed I determined that if I was invited to do another study, I would simply explain that I’m reading the Bible in 90 Days and it takes a large chunk of time each day. I cannot commit to anything new until that is completed.

As for is it changing me? – oh yes. Before I began I found myself more excited about this group than any Bible group I’ve been involved with in a long time. Since beginning I find that if I don’t read for the day I’m mad at myself and out of sorts the next day. I truly miss it. I’m also finding that I’m having more Bible / faith conversations. Hubby & I toss out questions or comments to each other several times a day. Last week my M-I-L (not a Christian) saw it sitting on my desk and was asking questions! I’m definitely finding I have a better understanding of who God is and who He is not.

  25. I am on schedule! I just replaced my first half-hour of net time in the morning with bible reading time. It doesn’t take nearly as long to read around 12 pages of the Bible as I thought it would.

I started doing this because I thought I needed the challenge. I’m keeping it up because this is the ONLY way to read the Bible successfully. I’ve done thru-the-bible plans before, but when it takes a whole year, it doesn’t sink in quite the same way. I’ve learned more this way in just 20 days than I did in 3 months on other plans. In fact, I’m considering just continuing this forever! I could read the Bible 4 times every year!

That is exciting. Never thought I’d think that was exciting. Praise the Lord!

  26. I’m doing it and loving it!! This has been so great for me, I’ve even talked my best friend into doing it.

  27. I am not an ‘official’ blogger for this but I am following your discussions regularly. It’s such a challenge to keep up but it’s so worth it. My husband has just started reading Bible to our boys in the evenings and as I listen in, I can honestly say “Oh, I read that” or “Oh yeah, I remember that”. Plus, we’ve had lots of interesting discussions about the “science” behind the laws.
The last time I tried this, 2 years ago, I had a death in the family that shocked my very core. I need to get past the weird ‘fear’ of that happening again. I know Satan tries to get us all off track…
Anyhow, keep up the good work with your SOAP. I look forward to them each day.

I am behind also about 3 days. I had hoped to get caught up today but I didnt. I am not letting myself get discouraged b/c I really want to complete this challenge. I want to be able to teach my girls more about Gods word! I will get caught up and I will celebrate with the rest of you Easter!

  29. I wanted to do this, because I have been a Christian for many years and consider myself a mature Christian, yet I have never read the Bible completely through. I know the New Testament very well, and I know my “favorite stories” of the Old Testament. But how can I truly claim to love God’s word if I have not read it all? I am so enjoying it right now, though some days have been more tedious than others.

Here is a joke my middle son made up today. I warn you, it is a groaner.
“Where is the first high-speed car chase in the Bible?”
    Answer: Read 1 Samuel 7:11

  30. I am behind. 3 or 4 days, but I am still reading. I am a little discouraged. I didn’t really look at the calendar before I started, and I am going in the hospital Feb 15 to have surgery, and will be there about 5 days. But maybe instead of getting further behind, I will have lots of time to get caught up and ahead! I guess I’m just feelins sorry for myself today, but I am enjoying the reading, and glad I started the program. I’m praying that we will all be successful with this goal.

  31. I have tried many programs for reading through the Bible in a year and usually would peter out somewhere around Isaiah. But when I saw your challenge to read the Bible in 90 days, I thought “It’s only 3 months–I can commit to something for three months…especially when at the end of that time I will have read the Bible cover to cover–a goal I have had for many years!”

I do my reading while my youngest is taking her nap (and the older 3 are at school). It means less time on the computer, but that has been a good thing! And having such a structured reading schedule in order to stay on track means that I have actually been having a DAILY quiet time instead of a daily quiet time that actually happens 4 days a week!!!

  32. I’m with RuthintheDesert. I’ve been working very hard to keep caught up but this last week has been difficult. I think I’ve reached that “make it or break it” hump. They say it takes about 21 days to form a new habit so If I press on it will become more fluid and natural.

I began this journey because I have been making an effort over the last year to draw closer to God and discern His will in my life. When I heard about this opportunity I felt a gentle nudge from Him to participate. So I know if I stick with it and put in the effort God will reveal to me what it is I need to learn.

Surprisingly, I have seen a change already. I’m thinking happier more positive thoughts just by being focused on Him instead of me.

  33. Oops, that would be “I am not behind….”

I just did my nails and I must be typing oddly!

  34. I am not behing, but it’s been hard this last week! I’m not enjoying it, not feeling very in-touch with God while reading…and I realized today that I’m not approaching it prayerfully…I’m just diving in. I want to have Samuel’s attitude: “Speak Lord, for Your servant is listening.”

  35. I’m 37.5 weeks pregnant (mom of 3 under the age of 5)and my goal each year was to read the Bible in a year when I heard about this challenge I was kind of hesitating and wondering ” could I do it for 90 days when I tried for years to do it for years to do it in 365 days?” However, I decided to commit myself to it and I’ve had days where I’m just tired as I said I’m very close to giving birth and have 3 little ones at home but I sometimes I read before getting out of bed in the morning and the house is quiet and/or before going to bed and obviously any other time I get in between.

I cannot say it’s not a challenge but I also have my husband who at first asked me if I was sure I could do it, now he is constantly checking up on me if I read for the day and when I say yes I feel so accomplished.

God has honestly been my strength and my prayer is that He continue to lead me and reveal Himself to me thru His Word.

I encourage you all whatever your situation, IF I CAN DO IT YOU CAN, I admit I get behind but I don’t allow it to hinder me, I purpose myself to catch up immediately and do it… Now I’m so into the reading I’m a bit ahead. God is good.

The reason I am reading is because 1. It’s the Word and I want it all, 2.

  36. Reading the Bible cover to cover has been one of my goals for a long time, so when I saw the challenge, it interested me for sure. The real reason I started is because I have recently been wishing that I knew certain things….the promises God has given us, the names of God as I come across them, the order of kings and their stories. I know I could find lists of these things on the internet, but I wanted to know them from my personal reading.

The reason I keep reading is because I’m finding it so interesting, and I’m getting so much personal revelation from it!

Right now I am completely caught up. I struggled a bit and got a few days behind last week, but was able to catch up. It was hard, but I did it!

I have noticed that my days have changed. I have been getting up early, before my house wakes up, and doing my reading. My days have gone better. Not that nothing has gone wrong, but spending that time with God first thing in the morning has really helped me keep my focus on Him.

I am behind – about 5 days behind, but I am okay with that. I am going to keep going without trying to “catch up”. The need to catch up would only create stress and make me less likely to finish. Instead I am going to keep doing one day’s worth of reading each day, and if I miss a day, I’ll pick it back up the next day. I may finish a week or two behind everyone else, but I’m okay with that. Reading the Bible in 100 days or so is just as cool! I’ve just been keeping all the emails and reading them on the relevant day.

  38. Somebody's Mimi Avatar

I am not an expert at finishing any book, let alone the Bible BUT if you just let go of the “fact” that it is the Bible and you have been told it is soooo hard to read and understand, and just read it like any other book I think you might enjoy it. If I come across things that are repetitious I scan them. If there are too many names to remember, let alone actually pronounce, I skip over them. I want to read and enjoy the words… for now. Later I will go back and read this book again, with a different mindset. Right now I just want to read AND if I should learn something that’s even better, but that is not my true intention this time around.

  39. I struggle with some of the reading, but when I come upon passages like this one. I am encouraged to keep moving forward because I never know what the Lord has in store for me through the readings.

  40. I am very far behind…sigh. Like almost to the end of Leviticus behind. I have been extremely busy at work and it leaves me so mentally drained at night, I just fall into bed instead of reading like I was. I do try to read a couple of chapters here and there and at night, but not ever day like I started out. :-( I’m not giving up though. Things are going to wind down in a couple of weeks and I’m hoping to read more each day and hopefully catch up! I have been enjoying the reading and learning more and more about God each time. I thank you for your continued encouragement and prayers, especially for those falling behind.

  41. I decided that I wanted to read the Bible in 90 days because I’m a person who needs structure and yes, deadlines. While I don’t have the Zondervan version, I did print out the reading schedule, which I keep in the inside cover of my Bible. Checking off those boxes is such a feeling of accomplishment. And I love that He is teaching me through His Word!

  42. I am on task (well, haven’t read today yet!) and I feel really determined to do this. I am so encouraged by your words, Amy, and knowing that we can fight the enemy together. I will pray for all of us, that we can return to the word and stay focuses and feel the love our Father is extending to us. Let’s spend time with Him!

  43. I decided to do it because I wanted to learn more about the Bible and, honestly? So I could answer my son’s questions about it with a bit more authority than I already have. I know it’s in there, but being better equipped to find an answer for him would make me feel more confident (he’s 4 & not reading yet, so I have to search for him when he has questions).

I’m finding myself more confident and calmer. I have like this internal check in my head now . . . is this what God wants or is this what I want? I’m also finding myself complaining less (okay, admittedly, I’m whining about crutches and my knee at the moment, but really, crutches, a 4 yo, and a 14 month old do not mix well).

  44. So yes, I am behind but have created a plan to catch up. I know that the enemy does not want me spending so much time in the Word (and gleaning so much from it) so I am not going to give him the pleasure of giving up. Thanks for the encouraging post!

  45. This is exactly something I have been struggling with! I have a blog post written in my head about two different times I have fallen behind and tried to catch up…

Reaching out to friends has really helped me stay motivated! :) Also the #b90days twitter stream bloggers have been great encouragement too!
