Ephesians 1:1-6: He chose us before we did (or didn’t do) anything

Good morning, friends.

I am taking a break from the Psalms for a bit and reading Ephesians over the next 27 days along with Candace over at His Mercy Is New.

It seems that both Candace and I are feeling a pull to gird ourselves more aggressively in the armor of God. In doing so, she developed a reading plan for Ephesians which both of us will be reading and I will be posting about regularly. She posts nearly daily on Instagram, I post nearly daily here on MomsToolbox and so, together, along with you, we’ll  likely have it all covered. Of course we all know that the important thing isn’t that she and I have it covered, but that each of us seeking God are covering that ourselves. However that works for you, we hope you’ll join us.

Our reading for today is Ephesians 1: 1-6.

Here is what I heard in Ephesians 1:1-6 using the SOAP method:

Scripture: Ephesians 1:5

He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will

Observation:

Even before we did or did not do one thing, he chose us. Yes, each of us, to be His. We get that sonship through Christ.

Application:

He wants each and every one of us to be His and we get there through Jesus Christ. That was His plan. That’s how He designed things. Our doing or not not doing things doesn’t change that. His desire is true fellowship with us. This fellowship and relationship is ours, as determined by Him. He didn’t design us to earn that sonship, it’d there with the relationship with Jesus. That’s pretty powerful stuff, in my book.

Prayer:

Father God,

Thank you for this reminder that I am yours… and that all of us are designed to be yours. You want us to be in fellowship with you. You predestined me for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, simple as that. He is our way to receive that sonship. That’s pretty awesome stuff.

Thank you for reminding me I don’t have to achieve ANYTHING to win your love. It’s already here, and my relationship as a child of yours is secured through Christ. I can chill and choose to achieve for other reasons, but not for your love.

Thank you so much.

Amen.

Tomorrow’s reading is Ephesians 1: 7-12. Click to see the Ephesians reading schedule.

  1. AMY! Have loved the Psalms with you! This thought of Ephesians is marvelous! I’m late noticing it, sorry! But got the schedule & will do the catch up! The words, ” marked in Him” just confirmed another word God says in Psalms, “set apart for Him!” I love your idea of writing out the whole book of Phillipians! I used to try to do this! But got lazy! Such a good discipline to write it out! I think I will do that for Ephesians!!!!!!! Thankyou for all you do by example!!!!!!! Merry Christmas!
