Who is Mom?
Hmm. What a question!
My name is Amy and I’m a full time mom three young children, ages 8 (boy), 6 (boy) and 3 (girl) , and one fantastic 16 year-old Danish foreign exchange student (whom we have known for years.)
I first tried my hand (fingers?) at blogging when I was training for a two-day bike ride from Houston to Austin to raise funds for MS. What an experience that was, by the way! (You can read my overview of the weekend here.) Nine months out I thought it was a crazy idea I would never achieve. I was not a cyclist. Eight months out I knew I had to do it. And did it I did, with lots of prayer and lots of encouragement and lots of determination. Anyhow, I enjoyed writing about my experiences, but once the ride was over I wasn’t sure what to write about.
It wasn’t long after that I decided to begin blogging using a domain name I registered nearly seven years prior when I first became a mom. I had grand ambitions of creating a fantastic site with all sorts of real-life tips and stories for moms back then.
Well, real life got in the way and the site didn’t materialize. But this blog did. And, wow! What an adventure it has already become!
I never expected to write so openly about my conversations with God, but by following a devotional and journaling plan called SOAP outlined by my pastor, I began to hear God telling me to do just that. So nearly every day that I have internet access you can read my daily devotional findings here. And I have truly enjoyed the feedback I have received on those!
In addition to devotionals, I also write about other facets of my life here and there. My husband was bitten by the traveling bug before we became married. Consequently we choose to travel more than most and have taken some excellent adventures with our kiddos and a few without. I try to share the highlights and what I’ve learned here as well as on my travel blog. MomsTravelTales.com.
I also serve as on Online Missionary through Global Media Outreach, a ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ, answering emails from people all over the world seeking Christ, and shepherding them as they grow in their own relationship with Christ.
Let’s see… what else might you want to know? Mothering did not come easy to me. It was a bit of a challenge, but I’m certainly glad I had the privilege to become a mom. I’m enjoying the journey much more now, and I hope to someday make it easier for new moms to make the adjustment, and already-moms to learn to lean on God, on wiser, more experienced moms and each other more.
Before I became a mom, I directed the public relations for The Children’s Museum of Houston as my last job and loved all of the hard work which resulted in coverage in the New York Times, Newsweek, USA Today, Parents, several in-flight magazines and many, many prime placements in local and regional media. I loved pitching stories and hosting live shots from the museum as well as serving as the museum’s spokesperson. Plus, I got to fine-tune the museum’s website and establish a press-center there, among other tasks.
My journalism training and work on Gator Growl (where I was able to work with MTV and E! Entertainment Television, among others) at the University of Florida prepared me well!
I guess that about covers it. But if you’d like to know anything else, just ask.
God’s blessings to you,
