It’s almost rodeo time here in Houston, which means the Kosher Chili Cookoff is right around the corner! And I get to serve as one of its judges!<\/p>\n

Are you in Houston?<\/b><\/h3>\n

I’d love for you to make plans to join me at the fifth annual Kosher Chili Cookoff, Sunday, March 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston.<\/p>\n

I’m pumped to get to try so many recipes of chili in one afternoon and I’m sure my kids will have a blast with all of the activities, too.<\/p>\n

Nope, I may not be Jewish, but I sure love great chili and I hear some of Houston’s best will be served there.<\/p>\n

Curious, as I was, about what makes a chili kosher?<\/b><\/h3>\n

I spoke with my long-time friend, Jen (whose Bat Mitvah I attended more years ago than I prefer to reveal here) who gave me a brief overview. She explained, that keeping Kosher means following Kosher dietary laws. (Click to see the Kosher primer<\/a> if you want to know the nitty gritty.) Without getting too detailed, I can promise you this, there are three ingredients that will NOT be included the chili: pork, shellfish and dairy products. However, I can also promise you that each team will enter a variety of chili that will give your taste buds a delicious experience. Think tender turkey with savory spices or slow-cooked beef with sauteed spiced vegetables. My mouth is already watering just thinking about it. (I might need to bring a Kosher wine as a palate cleanser for this one…)<\/p>\n

The Kosher Chili Cookoff is not just about chili, though.<\/b><\/h3>\n

In addition to all the chili there will be to eat, there will also be live music, games, a climbing wall, a silent auction and a jalapeno eating competition and more. It promises to be a great, family-friendly event.<\/p>\n
