{"id":8093,"date":"2011-06-30T19:00:45","date_gmt":"2011-07-01T00:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.momstoolbox.com\/blog\/?p=8093"},"modified":"2011-06-27T10:06:15","modified_gmt":"2011-06-27T15:06:15","slug":"blogging-through-the-gospels-john-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.momstoolbox.com\/blog\/blogging-through-the-gospels-john-13\/","title":{"rendered":"Blogging Through the Gospels: Really love one another!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Guest SOAP post from Bible in 90 Days graduate and soon-to-be mentor, Daenel.<\/p>\n<p>The reading for <strong>Friday is John 13<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what Daenel heard:<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Scripture<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>John 13:34<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: \u00a0just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Observation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As this was Jesus&#8217;s final meal with his disciples, he was laying out his expectations for them after his departure.\u00a0 Although the commandment to love one another was not a new one, the standard for the demonstration of love was new because it pointed out 2 things: \u00a01) the sacrificial nature of love and 2) it is produced through the New Covenant by the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t want his death to breed discord amongst the disciples, he wanted them to continue to walk together in brotherly love that others may see and be drawn to him through them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Application<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have you ever received an invitation to a family reunion and seriously thought about not going because you couldn\u2019t deal with the drama?\u00a0 You know, you love your family and you\u2019d do anything for them.\u00a0 Except spend time with them.\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s how Jesus wanted us not to be.\u00a0 He wanted the church family to be able to come together in love without all the drama that comes with family gatherings.<\/p>\n<p>When he said \u201cjust as I have loved you, you also are to love one another\u201d, he set the bar incredibly high ~ his love was sacrificial, he went to the cross and died for our sins; his love was without end, even though he knew he was about to be betrayed by one disciple and denied by another, he continued to demonstrate love.\u00a0 This is the type of love that he wants the church body to have for one another.\u00a0 The 35th verse says &#8220;By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dear Heavenly Father,<\/p>\n<p>Thank you, Lord, for the examples of love that you have set before us. \u00a0Thank you for showing us that love is patient, kind, generous and sacrificial. \u00a0Thank you for being the incarnation of love. \u00a0Sometimes it&#8217;s so hard to show love to those who hurt us. \u00a0And sometimes families squabble but, Lord, help us to love one another and show love even when it&#8217;s difficult.\u00a0 Fill our hearts with love for one another so that people will know that we are your disciples. \u00a0Thank you.<\/p>\n<p>Amen<\/p>\n<p><em>Daenel writes about navigating through life away from the library at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/livingoutsidethestacks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Living Outside the Stacks<\/a>. \u00a0You can follow her on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/DaenelT\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a> and &#8220;like&#8221; her on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LivingOutsidetheStacks\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Don&#8217;t forget to record your own <\/em><a href=\"..\/what-is-soap\/\" target=\"_blank\">SOAP observations<\/a> and feel free share your own thoughts or a link to your thoughts, here, too.<\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><em>Didn&#8217;t start reading or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.momstoolbox.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/29\/blogging-through-the-gospels-with-momstoolbox\/\" target=\"_blank\">Blogging Through\u00a0 the Gospels<\/a> with us?
