Accept and love… do not judge

Scripture: Acts 15: 7-8

7After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know sometime ago God made a choice among you that Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. 8God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us.

Observation: This passage comes from a time when some men were debating whether or not Gentile believers needed to become circumcised as those who were Jewish. The apostles and elders met and determined that the Gentiles should not be required to be circumcised, but that they should enjoy the grace of God just as they were, as it was God’s will His message would be shared with them. (The apostles and elders also sent some lifestyle and dietary guidelines to be followed, so feel free to read up through verse 35 to get the rest of the story.)

Application: God wants all who hear his message to follow him. He doesn’t want us to get caught up on traditions, customs and requirements, but he does want our true love and following. I also should not judge other true believers according to custom or worship style, but believe in him and follow his teachings. If I do have concerns, though, I should present them to those more educated in the Word than I, (and pray about it!) and follow their leanings, rather than come to my own decision.

Prayer: Thank you Lord, for allowing me to hear the news of your son, Jesus Christ. And for letting me hear it again and again until I really wanted to make a change and follow you. Please guide me as I keep your love central, focusing on your word and not judging other true believers’ worship styles and customs.
