It’s not often I ask for monetary support from my readers. But Multiple Sclerosis is still taking its toll on too many and MS 150 season is upon us.

I am always amazed at those of you who contribute and blown away by your support in the form of prayers and sweet, sweet notes. So here comes the big ask again this year…

Yikes! This Saturday it will only be EIGHT WEEKS until the MS 150, when I’ll cycle 180 miles from Houston to Austin in two days to raise money and awareness of Multiple Sclerosis. This will be my fifth year taking part in the ride and I am especially pleased to get to ride again (even if I haven’t begin training yet).

You see, I wasn’t sure if I was even going to be able to ride this year. As some of you know, I had a massive mystery cyst removed from my liver in mid-January. (For those of you who don’t know, I had 2 liters of liquid drained and now all is well. Weird, yes. But much better than lots of other options.) This health hiccup was a little surreal, uncomfortable and inconvenient, but, fortunately for me and my family, it was just a health blip that is most likely not going to reoccur.

God saw us through, taught me a few lessons and now I feel much better than I have in months.

So now, with just a short window left, it is REALLY time to kick it into gear for both my fundraising and my training!! I’ve got people counting on me!

In the past I have been able to raise between $2500 to $3600 each year because of your generosity. (That’s all friend and family contributions. Our personal contribution goes into my husband’s fundraising account each year.) I know many of you have supported me year after year, and I tremendously appreciate that. And I appreciate those who have supported me once or twice, too. Every bit of every donation goes to help those who suffer from MS.

My health scare was an awkward time of waiting, wondering and hoping all would end up with me being healthy. For those with MS, they have a much longer time of waiting and wondering and, thanks to fundraising efforts like those of the MS 150 ride, more and more who are diagnosed are ending up healthier and able to manage the MS. But there is still tons of research to be done. And tons of help to be shared.

I know times are tight. But that doesn’t mean that those with MS don’t still need you. Please consider contributing to the MS Society in support of my ride again this year… or contribute for the very first time. Not only would I appreciate your support, but those families impacted by the results of your funding will appreciate it, too.
And, yes, all contributions are tax deductible.

You can click over to my contributions page  and contribute, or you can mail a check to the MS Society. Drop me a note and I’ll send you the address.

Also, please pray for me. I’m way behind in my training, as the surgery put me out of commission for several weeks and then travel has taken a few weekends, too. I’m still amazed that I am allowed to ride and that I  have healed so well. But now there are no more excuses. Next week I intend to hop back on my bike and ride, ride, ride. I need to build those cycling muscles back up (and get my behind ready for all that saddle time, too!) If you could take a few moments to pray for my strength and endurance, as well as favorable weather, I would tremendously appreciate it.

Thanks for your consideration, your prayers and support. And thank you for any contributions you are willing to share to help make life better for those suffering from MS.

You can contribute right now by going here: http://main.nationalmssociety.org/goto/AmyGross

Want to know more?  Read about my previous adventures MS 150 training, cycling  and camping (yes camping) overnight between the two days of the ride.

PS: That picture at the top is from the first day finish in 2010. I finished about 20 minutes before my husband. I’m hoping for a repeat this year, but he’s already begun training! I’d better get after it!!!

Does Target know you’re pregnant? And what do the other retailers know?

Ever wonder how Target, and no doubt other retailers as well, collect data from us with every transaction and tailor their sales pitches?

In this story on Forbes.com, one father was outraged that his daughter was receiving coupons which were appropriate for a new mom. Little did he know her buying habits had pointed Target to deduce that she was, indeed, pregnant and, to appeal to that customer, they had sent applicable coupons.

So what does this mean for us?

Sure, collecting information about us is spooky, but it also helps us to get the coupons and deals that we want the most.

What do you think of all this data mining? Good, bad or both?

Is God calling you to share about Him? Romans 10:1-15

Here is what I heard today.. and how could I NOT post after hearing this?!

Scripture: Romans 10:14

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?

Observation:

People cannot believe unless they are given the opportunity to learn about the Lord.

Application:

How can I help others to hear by sharing the news about Jesus? Who is out there waiting for me to share with him or her?

Prayer:

Lord, you have opened so many doors for me to share your truth. Please, Lord, guide me hearing your voice and your direction in knowing what your next steps are for me in sharing your love and your Word. Help me to see your undeniable path.

Thank you for allowing me to share your joy and your love and your grace. Thank you for those who revealed you to me throughout my life on earth.

What about you?

What did you hear? How do you share His truth? Does sharing about Jesus come easy to you or can it be a bit of a challenge?

Do you dig peanut butter and love to save money, too?

In celebration of National Peanut Month this March, the Southern Peanut Growers organization is launching its third annual “PB my way” recipe contest, with the winner taking home a $500 Visa® gift card… and that will buy a LOT of peanut butter! Plus, for every recipe entered, the Southern Peanut Growers will donate a jar of peanut butter to hunger relief organization Feeding America.

I have to be honest here… reading the information about the contest made me hungry for peanut butter myself. You can see what’s left of the peanut butter and honey sandwich I made for myself when I sat down to share this with you:

I stay pretty basic with my peanut butter,  but what about you? Are you up for creating and sharing a low-cost way for others to get their nutrition on? And have you seen this Peanut Butter Breakfast Bread Pudding?!?

The Southern Peanut Growers peeps told me peanut butter is super-budget friendly, ringing up at about 20 cents per serving. But I’m not sure they know how much peanut butter I eat in one serving… I slather it on an english muffin and add honey and bananas before each of my MS 150 cycling training rides! And I’m extra-generous with how much I use.

What about you? What do you make with peanut butter?

Start smearing and submit your budget-friendly recipe at www.PeanutButterLovers.com until midnight EST, March 31, 2012.

In addition to bragging rights, one case of peanut butter will be awarded to the top three who enter the most delicious recipes, and the grand prize winner will receive a $500 Visa® gift card. The winning recipes will be photographed and featured on Southern Peanut Growers’ Facebook, website and e-newsletter.

So what recipe will you share… a new sandwich, an awesome peanut sauce to go with chicken? Your latest cookie, cake or decadent treat?

And on that note, are you a peanut butter with chocolate person or not? Have you tried peanut butter on your s’mores?

Let me know what you think of that…

Gaining Peace. Romans 8:1-17

How is your reading of Romans coming? I have found it to be quite powerful!I have really enjoyed reading it at this pace and SOAPing my way through. I hope you have, too. Here’s what struck me today:

Scripture: Romans 8: 5-6

5Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.

Observation:

If you live focusing on the binds of nature and the law, then you will ruled by sin. However, focusing on the Spirit and allowing THAT to lead will bring peace and life, not death, frustration and destruction.

Application:

Living a peaceful, Spirit-focused life is a choice. Yes, I have Christ in my heart. Now it is time to listen to Him more, and do as He directs. As I get better at focusing on Him, my life will become more peaceful as I begin to embrace and live out His teaching and turn away from sin’s hold.

Accepting his grace and my mistakes and moving on, rather than dwelling on them, is one way to move toward that peace.

How else can I move toward Him and implement the life He desires for me?

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for this reminder that I can chose peace or I can chose strife. Choosing you, and living with you in me, listening and letting you guide me, will bring peace.

I want peace. I want the life you have set before me.

Help me, Lord, to focus on you. Show me how when I slip. Help me to think about what you want for me and strive for that. I know that is the better way. I know that brings peace.

What about you?

Do you focus on the law (either for yourself or others) or do you focus on the Spirit?

If you’ve just found me today, feel free to jump into the reading right where we are. You can download the Romans Reading Schedule, print it out and check off as you read.
