B 90 Days Day 26 SOAP: Can you hear His whisper and tune out the shouts?

Today’s Reading: 1 Kings 16:21- 2 Kings 4:37

Scripture: 1 Kings 19:12

After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

Observation:

In this instance the Lord’s voice came in a small whisper, not in a loud shout.

Application:

Perhaps the wind, earthquake and fire were there to draw attention to the whisper that was to come. Or perhaps they were just there. Either way, Elijah knew to be still and wait, listening for the Lord’s voice.

Often I cry out to the Lord in hectic moments and want Him to answer me right away. I want to know what to do and I want a clear voice NOW. This happened just a few nights ago for me. I was struggling with something and called out the Lord, asking Him to give me the words for an email. (I know this sounds trivial, but it wasn’t a trivial matter.) I was worried and confused and knew that every word counted so I wanted each one to be right.

I called and heard nothing.

So I stepped away, climbed into bed away from the chaos and prayed again. And as I was laying there in the silence, I heard a very clear answer.

If we want to hear God, I think we need to focus on Him and not our struggle. We need to be ready to hear his whisper and tune out the shouts.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for listening to our prayers and answering them. Please guide each of us as we learn how to hear you better, whether your responses be loud and obvious or a quiet whisper. Teach us how to live focusing on you and hearing you rather than focusing on the struggles and letting them lead us.

Thank you for your continual love and guidance. And thank you for your beautiful whispers.

  1. Beautiful post, and you’re right; our lives aren’t trivial to God. He loves us, and so He thinks it’s lovely when we give Him the whole of our lives – the E-mails we send, the programmes we watch, music we listen to etc.

  2. I am so enjoying the Bible reading. I confess I had gotten away from regular reading in recent years. This challenge has renewed me in ways I can’t explain. I have shifted my priorities. I started late so I had to make time for a lot less TV and other distractions while gardening, canning, making jelly and the other stuff one does here in eastern KY this time of year. But I find myself watching my pressure canner with my Bible in my hand. It works for me.

I have finally caught up! I am so thankful for the flexibility in my life that has allowed me to catch up over the last week. Sorry that the flexibility was due to my youngest being sick and not allowed to go to daycare which resulted in some unplanned personal time off from work, but I made the best of it. Glad to be back on track and looking forward to staying there!

  4. Good Morning! I have fallen behind again.. 2 days this time, I am praying today that God puts it on my heart to shut out other things that distract me so I can focus on his word and get caught up with the challenge. I hope everyone has a wonderful day today!

    1. Hang in there and pursue that time for the Lord. You can do it and catch right up!
