Blogging Through the Gospels: Matthew 8

For Sunday, our reading is Matthew Chapter 8.

When it is time to read, please try to clear your reading area of all distractions. Close your eyes and talk with God.

As we have the first 6 days, thank Him first for the blessings that He has given you. Thank Him for the big stuff and the little stuff.

Next, present your requests to Him.

(We’re going to add to this routine next week, but stick with this for now.)

After you have thanked Him and asked Him for whatever you want to ask of Him, then ask Him to guide you through your reading so that His message to you will be clear.

Today, rather than hearing from me, Samantha Kelley of The Kelley Eight, who is one of our Blogging Through the Bible in 90 Days/ Bible in 90 Days mentors, is sharing her SOAP observations from Matthew 8.

You can learn more about the SOAP method here.

Here is what Sam heard:

I Choose Christ

Scripture: Matthew 8:34

“And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.”

Observation:

They begged Jesus to leave! They had no care for what He had just done for the demon-possessed men, they only cared about the loss of their property. It wasn’t just a few, all the city came!

Application:

If I choose the world, (possessions) and the things that it can offer, I am doing the same thing. I pray there is never a time in my life where I reject Christ as these people did. What a blessing they missed!

Prayer:

Father in heaven, keep my eyes and heart fixed on Your Son. Keep me always aware of the things around me that can get in my path. Help me to never choose anything in this world over your eternal home that you have prepared. Amen.

Sam is a happily wed, stay at home mother of 6. She can be found on her blog, The Kelley Eight, where she shares thoughts about home education, the Christian walk, homemaking, and maintaining weight loss success.

  1. Our approach to prayer greatly affects our response to God’s answers!

My reading today left me praying “change my heart Oh God” which reminded me of a very old, but beautiful song from the 80’s of the same name. Here’s a link if anyone’s interested.

  3. Amazing! That’s the verse I SOAP’d too..

    Day 7: Matthew 8

S: Wow.. I could pick so many.. In the end, Matthew 8:34 stood out as the most troubling. 34Everyone from the city went to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged him to leave their territory. (Youversion GWT)

O: My observation from the chapter is that Jesus was an awesome and powerful man with divine autority. Even demons recognized his pwer and authority. I can not imagine seeing/hearing of someone so powerful and BEGGING them to retreat from me, yet an entire city did just that because they were too attached to thier livestock -pigs.

A: I need to be aware of the “demons” in my life and the “pigs” as well.

P: Dear Father, Help me to see what things i set aside and deem more important that You. I know that in my mind, i put You first, but i am only human and I know that that gets in the way of reality. Help me to always see the things that would cause me to want “things” more than You.
    Amen.

  4. The same verse spoke to me. I just saw it from a different standpoint…

I love how you saw it as a rejection of Christ and His blessings in exchange for worldly possessions. I pray too that I will always choose Him first. Thank you for sharing your observation and your prayer.

  5. A man with leprosy came & knelt before him & said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” Matt 8:2
The centurion replied,” Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word and my servant will be healed.” 8:8
The extreme faith of the man w/ leprosy and the centurion in this chapter really stood out. They knew to humble themselves before Jesus, but also that he could do all things. Such positive faith filled words of belief “you can make me clean” & “My servant will be healed.” May we have as much faith as these two men!

  6. I chose:

But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”
    Matthew 8:26, 27

How I would have loved to have been there!

  7. Thanks Kelly, I also had thought that the townspeople had asked Jesus to leave due to fear, but I can see the asking him to leave because of the loss of their world possessions. Sad that we can do that and not even think twice.

    I chose Matthew 8:22
But Jesus told him, “Follow me and let the Dead bury their own” (NIV)

    Have a wonderful day.

During the Bible in 90 Days (which I am still workng on, btw), I did not attempt to do the SOAP journaling. But now I am doing it with each chapter of Matthew and really benefitting from it. Such a simple formula — but profound in its simplicity!

  9. Lots of verses I would have liked to have chosen for further study and reflection….but tried to narrow it down! I chose verses 24-26, about Jesus calming the storm. Jesus knew that He was doing His Father’s work, and because of this He completely trusted in God, and wasn’t afraid of the storm like the rest were. I want to be like Jesus in the storms in my life!

  10. Great observations Sam. Gracious we don’t realize just how much we have and how rich we are, and quite honestly? How that pushes our need for Christ out of our lives.
Distraction is a huge tool of the enemy!

Just thought I’d tell you how much I appreciated your SOAP today. I too, had no clue about that verse and now I know more than I did yesterday:)

  11. I always thought the town’s people asked Jesus to leave out of fear — his power was so great he overwhelmed them. I bet Sam’s observation is correct though. We humans are always and forever about our “Stuff”.

Thanks for making me rethink my assumptions, Sam!

    1. @Quilly- I studied up on this verse, and from everything I read, the people were concerned with the swine being lost. Very sad, isn’t it?
