Forgiveness for persecution

Scripture: Acts 7:60

Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep.

Observation: This verse concludes the story of Stephen, who was chosen to minister by his peers because he was known to be full of Spirit and wisdom. (Acts 6:3, 5) As the number of disciples increased, Stephen was the seized and brought to stand before the Sanhedrin on false charges of blasphemy. And after sharing the word of God, the priests were angry, as they still did not understand who Jesus was. They took Stephen outside immediately and stoned him.

Application: Even when facing death and persecution, Stephen looked toward Jesus and asked forgiveness for those who were persecuting him. Could I and would I do the same? It’s easy to say “yes.” I sure hope that is true.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for enduring so much pain for me and many, many others. And thank you for the many others who stand up for you, even to death. I am learning so much through them and their love and understanding. Please guard my heart and let it only be for you and your will. Please lead me away from my selfish desires. And bring me to forgive those whose actions may hurt me and recognize the truth behind the actions.
