How is your eternal retirement account?

Scripture: Luke 12: 21

“This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.”

Observation: This verse comes after the parable of a rich fool. This man’s crop produced so much excess that he built bigger barns to store the excess and then decided to eat drink and be merry. God told him he was a fool in doing this as that night his life would be taken. And he would have nothing to show for it, as all his worldly riches would be left on earth. He had not stored any treasures for himself in heaven. His didn’t have an eternal retirement account.

Application: Sure, preparing and saving for lean times or retirement is good planning. But it is not enough: Plan for eternity and build your treasures in heaven as well. Share what you have been blessed with… and not just financially. Be rich toward God by helping others through service, as well as financial contribution. He has blessed all of us with some sort of riches. It is up to each of us to use those riches to build the eternal kingdom, not just provide for ourselves on earth.

Prayer: Dear Lord, you have blessed me many times over in so many ways. Thank you for this reminder to pass those blessings along to those I can touch and, in turn, build up a giant account for my eternal retirement. Help me to be rich toward you always, and share your love with those you bring into my life, so that they, too, can build their own treasures in heaven.
