How to cut an onion without crying

When I cut onions, I don’t just get itchy, watery eyes. My eyes sting and I am in pain for quite some time after I finish with the cutting, wash my hands and flush my eyes.

My eyes are even watering as I write this, a full 13 hours after my last onion-cutting experience.

Last night, however, I cut an onion without the slightest bit of discomfort, as our foreign exchange daughter from Germany told me how to cut an onion without crying and it definitely worked.

Put water in your mouth and keep it there while you peel and cut the onion.

Yep, just take a drink of water, but don’t swallow it, and keep it in your mouth until you are finished cutting. Your eyes will not water, burn or itch.

Try it out the next time you are cutting an onion and enjoy the experience of meal prep without tears…. at least when it comes to cutting onions.

  1. I am so trying that! My eyes are awful with onions! To the point where I need to sit with my eyes closed and let them water for a few minutes-down my face watering-to clear them or else they will burn all day and water when I go to bed. I’ll let you know if it works!

  2. Keep em in the fridge. Cold onions don’t make me cry!

  3. Wow. Would have never thought of that. Guess it goes along with the chewing gum idea.

  4. I too hate onions…I even blacked out once chopping them. I will have to try this for sure!

  5. I hate cutting onions because of this problem. What an easy solution…I HAVE to try this!

  6. Wow – I’ve never heard of this! I usually stick it in the freezer for at least 20-30 minutes prior to chopping. I also cheat and use my Pampered Chef chopper to speed things along! ;)

  7. I tried this tonight while making dinner. It worked for the first 1/3 of the onion! Then my nose started running and my eyes teared up. Much pain. Sadness. :( Hubby finished chopping the onion for me (he’s the official onion chopper in our house).

    1. Oh no!! I Am so sorry to hear that!! I promise it worked beautifully for me.

  8. I have tried so many different methods when cutting an onion and none of them have ever worked.

I have not heard of this one, so I will have to try it and see.

  9. Wow! Awesome to know.

Great ideas! When I wear my contacts and cut an onion my eyes don’t water.

  11. I use a lot of onions when I cook and I was told by someone a long time ago to whistle while you cut an onion. Try it sometime.

  12. I cut onions almost every meal. I will try this next meal and I sure hope it works. I have to explain to my boys everytime I cut up an onion that Mommy is not sad but that it is the onion. LOL

Another tip I learned (when I had to prep a salad bar which included cutting onions), chew on a toothpick. Works like a charm!
