Proverbs SOAP: Help the poor or else be wicked

A Chapter of Proverbs a Day…

Scripture: Proverbs 29:7

The righteous care about justice for the poor,

but the wicked have no such concern.

Observation: Care for the poor or else you are wicked.

Application: I’m not exactly sure just what my direct application for this today is, but I think God is working on me. Especially after yesterday’s SOAP. And a study I was recently invited to join. And a book I’ve been trying to finish since October.

The book is The Hole in Our Gospel, by Richard Stearns, who is the President of World Vision U.S. It shares how we, as Christians, are really not living the entire gospel, as we are not doing nearly enough for the poor. And it is so true.

I will finally finish this book by Tuesday. My scheduled and rescheduled reading and dinner group meets then to discuss it. I think it is going to be a humbling discussion that I hope turns into brainstorming practical ways that each of us can really take steps to make a difference and help in tangible ways.

The poor need those of us who aren’t poor. God instructs us to help. No more looking away and just helping a little. It’s time to really turn the tide.

Oh boy.. what does He have  planned?

Prayer: Lord, I feel like you keep bringing this back up to me. And you know I and my husband have  hearts to help. Show me what you want me to do.  Equip me as you see fit.

Open the eyes of all of us who can help to see how we can help and shine YOUR light.

PS: Have any of you read The Hole in Our Gospel? What did you think about it? What have you done since then?

  1. Amy, I am in the middle of that book right now! It’s great! 2 other favorites that go along with that theme are Crazy Love and Same Kind of Different As Me. Those are 2 of my favorite books ever…I have been making many changes in my life over the past year. Trying to get rid of the “clutter” in my life…clutter can be physical things in our house, busy-ness of our lives, too much of EVERYTHING. I read a quote from Shaun Groves the other day that simplifying is not just about being frugal, it is about loving God and loving others more and better. (obviously that is not the exact quote.) If we spend less, we are free to GIVE more. Living more simply so that others can simply live. Anyway, I could go on and on about this…as it is right where God has me right now. But, I’ll leave it at that, it’s getting too long already. :)
