SOAP: True relationship is key, not going through the motions

Scripture: Colossians 2:16-17

16 So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new-moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. 17 For those rules were only shadows of the real thing, Christ himself.

Observation: The important thing is a relationship with Christ. Let that be your focus, not the rules, regulations and ceremony.

Application: When you have a true relationship with and love of Christ, you will be obedient out of love and choice. Being bound by rules might send you on the right direction, but it is a true relationship which will save you, not your actions.

I find this particularly interesting this morning, as I am attempting to rush through my SOAP time.

“Please God,” I prayed just moments ago, “Let your message be clear and quick this morning because I need to get back on track here but I also need to wake the kids soon.”

And look what he tells me.

Going through any motions or following any law is not enough. True worship and devotion is the key. Following any custom (even my devotional/ SOAP time) isn’t required. He loves me. We have a relationship. That is all that is required.

Rushing through our time together to just check it off isn’t the way to go. But appreciating his love and forgiveness and craving good devotional time is the way to go. And I do, most of the time.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord for your forgiveness of my forgetfulness. By reading and reporting on your word each day I will not gain any more ‘points’ in heaven. My spot with you is already assured through our relationship.

Thank you, Lord, for that. Thank you for loving me when I fall short and for when I am rushed and equally so when I am having a mountain-top experience with you, so filled up with your word.

Thanks for being there every time I call you close. And thanks for this reminder that true relationship is what is important.
