You can’t grow toward God without God

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3:6-7

6 I planted a seed, Apollos watered it but God made it grow. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who makes things grow.

Observation: You cannot grow without a relationship with God.

Application: Other believers and resources written by believers can put you on the right path toward God and toward growing in your faith, but real growth can happen only through a direct relationship with our Father. And that can only happen through Jesus Christ and in spending time with Him… reading the Bible, praying and listening. Just reading others’ words about him, or even listening to others’ words about him is not enough to enable you to grow. You need that direct line of communication.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for showing me how to carve out time for you in my busy days and nights. And thank you for your forgiveness when those moments are brief. Please, keep me on the path you have set for me… and keep me diligent in my study and prayer time so that I do not stop growing toward you.

And Lord, I pray for all those wishing to grow in you but not willing to seek you out in their own reading and time alone with you. Guide them in giving back the time you have given them so that they, too can grow in you. Help them to see where to begin reading the Bible or praying in a way they can understand and apply. And soften their hearts to hear your message and make the change to listen to YOUR words, and not just those of mere men and women.

  1. This is great. So often we can get caught up in hearing about God from other’s, but that doesn’t mean we are in relationship with him. I’m a worship leader and I make sure that I’m just not on stage singing his praise and calling it good enough, but that I’m in a direct, personal relationship with the lover of my soul.

  2. Awesome! yep I totally agree, I would add “I am the vine and you are the branches, apart from Me you can do nothing” John 15:5 Maybe even the verse, oh what is it? I am the Great Shepherd and my sheep hear MY voice, another voice they will not follow. Something along those lines anyway.
