B 90 Days Day 37: Handling difficult reading

Today’s reading: Job 8:1- Job 24:25

In lieu of a SOAP post today I thought I would chat a bit about the reading.

Some of the Bible can be tough to understand and challenging to read. The stories might be confusing or just simply hard to take based on what you understand about God and your life today.

Job can be tough to read and tougher to understand completely. I know that I have my own questions and I ask the Lord to show me what he wants me to understand and hear with every reading of his book and others.

My prayer for you, when you come across something that troubles you anywhere in the Bible, is not that you understand it all and find every deep meaning represented right now. Instead I pray that you, in turn, will pray and ask Him to reveal to you what He wants you to know and allow you to drop the rest. And that you will hear Him beckon you back when the time is right for you to dig deeper.

Reading the Bible straight through to get the ‘big picture’ can be tough. There is probably lots of wonderful stuff in there you never knew about and there is also probably some confusing stuff that might not seem so good, too.

Do your best to hang in there, though, and remember that every word is God-breathed. He brought you to His word and this challenge to read it all in 90 days for a reason.

Hang tight. Keep reading. Pray and make sense of what you can with His help. He will guide you through the rest at the right time.

Job was very difficult the first time I went through, and I’ve been dreading this part. I “got it” today, and realised that there is a lot of value in my un-favourite book. I’ve been joking that my aversion to Job probably meant there was something I needed to see, and I think I was right.
Sometimes a bit of time away and a second (or third or fourth) reading can really make it click.

Thanks for this timely message. I’ve tried to read through Job before, and I just don’t “get” it. As I continue reading through Job tomorrow, I will ask for God’s guidance — I already feel that the desire to return to this book in the future and do an indepth study.

  4. I just had a similar discussion with my 90 day reading partner. I’m having trouble getting through Exodus and Leviticus. She explained that she reads a little and try to find a summary of each chapter to get a basic understanding. Since this is our first time attempting this, I find that both asking for God’s guidance and not making it more difficult than it has to be is very helpful.
