Here’s what I heard in Exodus Chapter 3:

Scripture: Exodus 3: 7

The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.

Observation:

The Lord doesn’t just hear he cries of suffering and let them go. He is concerned about them and wants the suffering to end. As you read on in this chapter, the Lord tells Moses how He will take action and also warns him that Pharaoh has free will and will take some convincing. The Lord reassures Moses that He will overcome.

Application:

Sometimes I feel as though my cries of frustration might sound like irritation to the Lord, my creator. No, I am not trapped as a slave, but there are times that I feel overwhelmed, unhappy and trapped in other ways. Don’t get me wrong: many other days I feel joy-filled and exhilarated. But there are those times that I cry out and wonder if I’m just a moaning mess.

I think God is telling me that He hears me through those moans and that he doesn’t want me to suffer. He also wants me to recognize the world is broken, but I should hang in there and He will be there for me.

Prayer:

Lord, there is so much suffering and hurt here on Earth. I don’t understand it and I don’t like it. Thank you for this reminder that you do hear my cries of frustration and that you will respond appropriately. Please grant me what I need to get through those times gracefully, whether that be patience, understanding, love, insight, or whatever you know will guide me and focus me on you, not the irritation. I love you, Lord.
