Gaining true wisdom

Scripture: Psalm 111:10

New International Version:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;

all who follow his precepts have good understanding.

To him belongs eternal praise.

New Living Translation:

Reverence for the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom.

The rewards of wisdom come to all who obey him.

Praise his name forever!

Observation: True reverence for the Lord brings true understanding. You can’t fully understand if you aren’t truly trying to obey (nor would you understand how to obey if you didn’t respect and revere him.)

Application: I cannot gain wisdom and understand without revering, honoring and fearing the Lord. He will teach me what I need to know when he knows my heart is ready. To ready my heart, I must set and keep my focus in the right direction: I must respect, love and want to serve the Lord first and foremost in my life.

** I opted to use two versions today because I wanted to get another take on the word “fear” and not just use my study notes. Checking verses against other translations can often give new insight. If you don’t have a parallel Bible already, consider putting it on your Christmas wish list. It might open new doors of understanding for you (but only if you are revering God… right?! J).

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for guiding me in my journey to become closer to you. Thank you for this reminder that my wisdom will grow as my reverence does. Thank you for your patience, love and constant guidance. Please continue to draw me closer and guide me in placing you, and keeping you, as my first priority. Thank you for your forgiveness when I so often fall short and put other meaningless things first. Please make me aware of these mistakes as they happen so I can set things straight. Thank you. Lord.
