Menu Plan Monday: Ike Evacuee Edition

As many of you know, I often post our weekly menu here. It’s a great way to start off the week with grocery list in hand, and in planning out the meals I take a look at all the week’s activities, so I’m better able to tackle the week, as well.

This week is a little different. I am an evacuee from Hurricane Ike and I have no idea what this week will bring.

Our house is without power and my family is in Texas, whereas I have been attending a wedding celebration in Las Vegas. My flight home today was cancelled and, after many, many calls to Continental (the last call lasting more than 45 minutes) I am booked to fly from Vegas to Newark and then Newark to Dallas tomorrow. (Flying directly to Houston is not an option until Thursday.)

We are blessed to have family near Dallas who we can visit with and stay with while we figure out our next steps. Our house in Houston is fine, we just lack power for the moment.

So, that being said, here’s my menu plan for the week:

Monday (Mom’s menu only)

Breakfast: Here’s my guess on airplane cuisine: one fresh-ish banana, Cheerios in a handy bowl container, 2% milk and maybe a very processed shelf-stable muffin.

Lunch: Hmmm. What will Newark have to offer? I just checked the airport restaurant listings to see if anything exciting stuck out. They have the typical airport fare: McDonalds, TCBY, TGIFridays, Chilis, bars and bar food, sbarro, Miami Subs.. . They also have a cereal bar called Cereality among the list. I’ve never been to a cereal bar. I’ll have PLENTY of time in Newark, so maybe I’ll check out the cereal place. (I know you are wishing your life could be so glamorous.)

Dinner: I’ll still be in Newark. My options for airport food are almost limitless.

Snacks for the day: Oy-Vey! This is where it gets scary. I MUST stay away from the gigantic hot, soft and just-a-little-bit-crunchy-on-the-outside pretzels and search out some not-so-processed items.

Tuesday

Breakfast: I’ll wake up in a real house with electricity this day. And I’ll get to be with my family again! This calls for celebration! And I know Dunkin Donuts is right around the corner! But I’m going to need some fruit and/or yogurt to atone for my eating sins of Monday. (And the cream-filled doughnut, too.)

Lunch: No idea. I’ll be a houseguest. I think I might become a grocery-shopping, meal-planning houseguest if my brother-in-law and sister-in-law will let me. But all my recipes are at home.

Yesterday I was telling a different sister-in-law, the Happy Housewife, how she has influenced me. I am actually wishing I had a few of my cookbooks from home (and my breadmaker and new crockpot that has a sensor thing) so I could use some of my idle time to try out new recipes.

What has happened to me? What did she do to me when I was there in July/ August?

But WAIT! I can still try out new recipes… I’m not the only one who is a Menu Planner. I can check out tons of other menu plans at the Organizing Junkie’s Menu Plan Monday! Laura, you rock the house! I’ll just click over there, see what everyone else is eating, click on their recipes and go to town!

So, if you have any good ideas or recipes, link to them from the Organizing Junkie’s blog and leave me a note here so I know to check there.

Woo-Hoo! I am loving this whole blogging community!

Okay, so that’s it for me now. I have no idea what I will eat this week. But check back later after everyone else’s meals are posted there. I’ll give ‘em a look, chat about it with our gracious hosts and plan a new menu Tuesday or Wednesday.

And I am quite thankful this didn’t turn out to be the Evacuee Without Power edition. Then my menus would look something like this:

Cereal with powdered milk, whatever fruit is left

Pb&j sandwiches or Spaghetti-Os (we have a gas grill)

Shells and cheese

Beefaroni

and other delicacies like that.

Okay, happy eating! I’m off to go find dinner and then get packing. I get to see my family tomorrow night!
