Sometimes an impulsive decision can be a wonderful thing.
Two summers ago, I stumbled upon Mom’s Toolbox. The post describing a Bible reading challenge caught my eye. Before I could talk myself out of it, I signed up.
Immediately the doubts surfaced.
What were you thinking?! Are you kidding? You’ve never opened the Bible before! Quick, cancel, cancel!
I took a deep breath and closed the web window. No turning back now.
Was I nervous? Oh yes!
I wasn’t raised to believe the Bible. Frankly, the scriptures intimidated me. I envisioned an angry, vengeful God punishing all the unworthy people within those pages.
Yet I really wanted to try the challenge. Quitting before it started was not an option.
I chose to do the readings at night. And soon I cherished the new schedule I adopted. Once we settled the kids into bed, I’d change and crawl under the covers, Bible ready. The words swirled throughout my mind, comforting, teaching. What a glorious way to fall asleep!
I also appreciated the weekly check-in with my group leader. I needed accountability! Because I had to report where I was in the schedule, I didn’t allow myself to lag behind.
Eventually the time came. The challenge ended. Wow! I read the entire Bible, cover to cover in three months! What I didn’t expect to feel was sadness and emptiness, as if I lost a friend. Fortunately, my group leader advised us to continue reading whether it be daily devotions or a Bible study. My heart had opened wide and it was very fragile to enemy attacks.
I floundered a bit. But for the first time in my life, I understood the ultimate love story! And I knew where to go to seek the words for support, encouragement and guidance.
