Pondering the Easter celebration…

Not too long ago I was collecting opinions on the Nintendo DS when a friend suggested that a DS might make a nice Easter present.

Easter present?

We don’t give our kids Easter gifts.

I typically do buy new clothes for the kids for Easter Sunday and the Easter Bunny does fill baskets with candy and maybe  a small toy or book, but we don’t give our kids gifts for Easter.

Am I missing somthing? Do the rest of you exchange gifts on Easter?

And, I honestly cannot remember who said this to me. So if you were the one, please don’t let this post offend you. I just thought I should do a little research on the subject…

And, to all of you… If your family does exchange bigger gifts than the Easter Bunny brings to my house, I am in no way making a judgement here. Different families have different traditions. And I do love to hear how different families do things.

If you could keep that in mind in the comments and share your thoughts without putting down other ideas, I would tremendously appreciate it.

So what do we do for Easter?

Our family will leave out empty baskets Saturday night (ones we’ve used before) for the bunny to leave his presents in while we sleep. After we wake, we’ll check out the baskets and probably find a medium-sized chocolate bunny and a few assorted candies and maybe a small toy, stickers or book.

After breakfast we will head to church. After church we will spend time with our extended family, visiting, searching for eggs and eating a casual meal. The afternoon is typically spent just enjoying each other and the day, setting aside other to-dos.

Our Easter celebration is low-key and relaxing. We honor our Savior at church and with our pre-meal blessing, but we don’t enact any Bible stories or do anything like that. And we talk about the meaning of Easter the week leading up to the day and mention it throughout the day, but that’s really it. And I do believe each of our children has an appropriate understanding of the holiday for his or her age.

So… Please tell me about your family’s Easter celebration…. Gifts or no gifts? Easter bunny or not?  And how do you honor our Savior?
