Proverbs SOAP: I’ve gotta watch my tone and words

A Chapter of Proverbs a Day…

Scripture: Proverbs 15:1

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Observation: I think this refers both to the actual words spoken as well as to the tone used.

Application: I could do a better job watching my tone and thinking before I speak. Sometimes things come out sounding more aggressive and I intend for them to sound. I need to work on that.

Prayer: Lord, you know that I often convey a message of anger or frustration even when I don’t intend to do so. (Not that I ever should intend to do so.)

Please guide me in stopping myself in being quick to respond. Help me to think out my responses when I am angry, frustrated or feel wronged and respond with kind words and a kind tone. Help me to give gentle answers and responses always and keep harsh words and harsh tones from coming out of my mouth.

As you say, those only stir up anger and make things worse. Even when I am angry, I should chose my words and tone carefully or else nothing will get resolved in a positive manner.

Please guide me here. I need it.

** I’d love to have you join me in reading a chapter of Proverbs a day in April. Feel free to jump in with today’s date!

For May and June, we’ll work our way through the Psalms. More details to come

  1. This hit me right between the eyes as I am frustrated at this moment because of plans made being cancelled.I didn’t respond in anger. In fact, I just quietly said okay However my stomach was reeling and my blood pressure headed up as I ended the call.Lord I want so much to be able to just take things as they come.I try really hard not to get too tied to my schedule and I work very hard not to be demanding with my need for others’ time. Help me regain my peace as I go about the rest of the day. Help me respond in love instead of reacting with my disappointment hanging out in my face and tone when someone else’s needs come before mine. Thank you Lord that your blog line is always open and that your calendar is always free for time with me.
