Admiring quilts at the quilt show

My daughter loves quilts.

In Kindergarten, her class toured a quilt show at her school (which is at a church) and she has been hooked ever since. Every year we go to that same quilt show and admire the stories and craftsmanship in each of the quilts on display.

I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that there is quilting in her family heritage.

My mother-in-law made several quilts for each of our children through the years and I have memories of quilts made by women of previous generations in my own family. I know there is at least one floating about in our family which has scraps of my mom’s childhood clothing. I, however, do not know how to sew. But I’ve thought about it.

After seeing so many beautiful quilts through the years at the show, a few months ago I decided to enter a few of our own family’s quilts in the quilt show. Here are a few photos of the quilts we entered:

Sharing them at the show, and seeing them with the others was pretty exciting. We, of course also enjoyed looking at so many other quilts, admiring their designs, colors and attention to detail. We also enjoyed reading many of the stories accompanying the quilts.

This one I thought was a brilliant quilt for showcasing CubScout patches and achievements:

We loved this quilt for teaching young children colors and textures:

This quilt has buttons as ornaments on the Christmas trees:

We liked the bulb stitching on this Christmas quilt:

My daughter really liked the bold pattern on this quilt:

I especially preferred the traditional patterns in these quilts:

Each year when I leave the quilt show, I think about learning how to sew and quilt myself. This year, again, the idea is floating around in my brain. I’m so intrigued by hand-sewing, but I wonder if I would have the patience.

Do you quilt or sew?

If so, what do you love about it? If not, have you ever thought about taking it up?

I have also thought about quilting… and I still might. I am really fascinating with the older quilts and how they were hand stitched (nothing done by a sewing machine)! The time doing quilting was a social event, at least, at my Grandmother’s house it was that way. I believe the “Tulip” quilt was actually done by my Great Aunt Laura Betz Schneider for my Mother when she turned 16 or for her graduation from High School in 1941.

    1. Thanks, Mom, for finding out the story of that quilt!
Maybe we could both learn to sew and quilt when we are together sometime…

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE quilting! I don’t especially like sewing the top together so I usually choose really simple patterns that I make up myself (that way if I mess up, it’s easier to modify). My favorite part is hand quilting the quilt. I work on it every evening while watching tv with my husband. It’s SO relaxing. And I love the satisfaction of looking at the finished quilt. I give away about 3/4 of mine and have family members waiting in line to get theirs. I don’t enjoy it as much when I feel pressured but that’s okay. I’m currently working on one for my 28 year-old-son. He designed this one – it’s a Mine Craft video game design. I’m pretty excited about it.

You should try quilting. It’s so rewarding!

    1. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and for the encouragement. I’m glad you enjoy it. I love that you said it is relaxing. That was just what I was hoping to hear. :)
