Serve because you are asked, not to be thanked. Luke 17

Today’s reading is Luke 17. Here is what I heard using the SOAP devotional format:

Scripture: Luke 17: 9-10

Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? So you, also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’”

Observation:

Servants should do as they are instructed because they are instructed to do it, not because they are seeking thanks.

Application:

In many ways I am a servant and I need to act as such, doing my duties without expecting a thank you. I admit that I want to hear that “Well, done, good and faithful servant.” But in no way should I expect it.

I am a servant to the Lord and, in so doing that, I am also a servant to my husband, children and others at times. I need to remember to always serve in joy and without expectation of reward or thanks. I need to just do my job and get joy from a job well done, not from others telling me of a job well done.

Prayer:

Lord, please guard my heart from working for thanks. Help me to work and do as you ask because you ask. I know I can try to be a people pleaser and that I need to stop leaning in that direction so much. Help me Lord and remind me when I drift. Keep me focused where you want me focused and guide me to find joy in just serving, not joy in the praise that often comes from serving.
