SOAP: Am I exalting myself or honoring the Lord?

Scripture: Luke 14:11

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

Observation: Those who seek fame will ultimately be shown for their motives. Those who serve others before themselves will be truly honored.

Application: It is so hard to not get caught up in seeking status of one kind or another. There are lots of ways to seek status out there that are more than just the obvious cars, clothes and typical status symbols.

I need to really think about all that I do and why I do it. Am I doing it to honor the Lord or to make me ‘look’ better? And if I am doing it to make myself look better in one arena or another… Why and I doing that? How can I change that? Are my actions honoring myself or my Father?

Prayer: Lord, please guide me in examining my motives in all the areas in my life. I don’t think I seek traditional status symbols. But I bet there are a few others I chase. Open my eyes to my true motives and guide me in humbling myself and working towards honoring you, not me, in all I do.

  1. someone once told me to ask myself “would I be just as happy if X project got done by someone else, as long as it got DONE” and if the answer is yes, then my motives are good.
