The Great Playground Challenge

I had so much fun compiling my list of free Summer activities for kids in Houston, that I started thinking of even more free summer fun.

This might might be obvious, but there are a LOT of fantastic playgrounds and parks very near where I live… and so often I overlook them.

I asked my kids (ages 5, 7 and 9 years) if they would like to do some playground research this summer and compare a few of the parks near us and decide which one has the best playground.

So we developed the Great Playground Challenge.

We plan to visit five different state, county or city parks near us with playgrounds over the next few weeks.

We’re gonna slide, picnic, swing, climb and see which parks and which playground elements we love the best. And the best part is, I know there won’t be any boredom involved in this process! This is going to be filled with super fun comparison!

I’d like to challenge you to do the same in your area, if you can.

Identify four or five playgrounds near you and embark on a similar challenge. Bring your camera and maybe even a notebook and do some research. You could even bring a stopwatch and time which slides are the fastest!

For the science-minded, you might even apply the scientific method and make a hypothesis as to which park each child thinks he will like the most and why… and then go test each child’s theory. Whatever decision you reach, you are sure to have a lot of fun sliding climbing and giggling in the process!

So… what four or five parks near you will you visit this summer? Are you in on the Great Playground Challenge?
