The sweetest birthday (cake)

Birthday CakeFor all we, as moms, try to do to make birthdays special, it is really amazing when it comes right back to you.

Last year I was in Spain on a wine media trip for my birthday, so my daughter really got into it this year.

She started the day out by giving me a handmade card in the morning. Then, later in the day, the two of us baked a cake together.

“I want to make one from scratch because you get to do more,” she said.

We decided on yellow cake recipe from the good old Betty Crocker cookbook and got to work. She asked if she could do most of the work with me guiding her.

So she scooped, measured, and stirred and I supervised, cracked the eggs and scraped the sides of the mixer. We had a great time baking together.

We decided on white frosting so her decorations would stand out better. I frosted the cake white with the “best frosting ever” (according to her) and then I left the room.

She invited me back in to see the first stage…

and then I took in the finished product (pictured up top).

After that, she came to visit me in my room and I noticed she was wearing a label with her name on it. Then, she handed me a label of my own:

This absolutely made me laugh.

“I’m sorry I didn’t go get you a present with Dad,” she said at one point.

“What?!” I had to say. “You gave me the best present I could hope for from you today,” I said. And it was true. We really did have the best time together. For that, I will ever be thankful.
