Why host a foreign exchange student?

Sure there are lots of really good, respectable reasons to host a foreign exchange student.

Today, though, I have a few others…

An extra child in the family means an extra birthday party and birthday cake. (Ya gotta celebrate her birthday, too!)

It will definitely motivate you to clear out that extra bedroom that has been collecting clutter. Ours went from unintentional storage room to airy, feminine girl’s room complete with a very much-needed paint change in about 3 days (and was truly ready for guests over summer break!).

Your family gets to try new international dishes… Tonight we got to eat some delicious German food prepared properly!

You might get to try out high school before you are really there again.
(And you might even learn a trick or two in parenting teens that you never would have thought about when you were there. Oh, the things I have already learned…)

You get to play host to your city, state and country and take all the fun ‘field trips’ again. Disney, space shuttle launch, football games and festivals, here we come! Plus we have to take her ice skating, roller skating, out to eat Tex-Mex, to the massive shopping malls and on other fun ‘American’ adventures, right?

I really never expected that our family would host two foreign exchange students within two years, but I am certainly thankful for the adventures… And the extra cake.

Works for me!

  1. Hi there! I know you wrote this at the beginning of your academic year, but I stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say hello. My family is hosting our second academic-year student, a girl from Germany, this year. As the year winds down, I’m dreading her leaving… she brings so much joy and laughter to our household! I’m also looking forward to our continued relationship; our former student, whom we hosted 4 years ago, is coming back for a visit this summer, and I’m so thrilled that we’re still close. Hugs from one host mama to another! :)

  2. My sister hosted and exchange student and loved the experience. They still stay in touch and my sister is going to Germany to visit her next summer.
