Bible 180 Week 12: From Job to the Psalms

Hello, sweet friends! Happy Week 12 to you!

Can I just say (again) that I love the pace at which we are reading? I hope it is working for you, because it is certainly working for me. I am hearing SO SO much.

Last week’s reading had so much beauty in it.

I loved the beautiful example of prayer in Nehemiah 9:5-37. The writer gives thanks to the Lord, then talks of His mighty works for quite some time and then presents his current challenge. After that, he shares what he and his people will commit to doing to follow Him. What a wonderful way to talk to our Father and make requests!

Next we had Esther. Esther is so amazing to me. Here we have a women whose strength most definitely comes from the Lord. She listens and follows the guidance and rules put in place by the men all around her, but she also shows us her power even as she follows those rules. She prays, she fasts, she invites others to do the same and then she acts with beautiful restraint and boldness and saves the Jewish people. She is one of my heroes, for sure.

And then we reached Job.

I confess, that, in the past, Job was a book that I just made my way through, trying to get to the end, not really soaking much in as I read. Yes, I have TONS of questions on the premise. Yes, I am still puzzled as to why Job had to endure so much tragedy.

This time, though, at this pace (and perhaps pairing with all the calamity in the world right now) I was able to just L-I-S-T-E-N to the conversations. In listening I heard so very much that I really needed to hear. I saw the conversations pointing toward Jesus in Job 9:33 and Job 33:23-25 and I soaked in so many explanations of wisdom and where it can be found throughout the reading.

I am looking forward to the conclusion of Job today and the Psalms we will be reading for the rest of the week. I feel like every day is a treasure hunt. I hope you feel the same way.

Weekly check in

What treasures have you found in the reading this week?

At this point, I know that we have readers in all sorts of spots in the reading. Some are a touch behind, some are waaaaaay behind and some of you are right on track. No matter where you are in the reading, I would love to know what you heard last week. What is pulling you closer, what is grabbing you, what is making you think and/or what is bringing you joy?

Let us know you are here, reading, no matter where you are in the schedule by leaving a comment. Please let us know about the treasures you are finding, what really grabbed you as you read last week. I love to hear how he is speaking to others. It always amazes me how one reading can reach many people differently, or very similarly.

  1. I agree, each day is a Treasure Hunt! It’s been Gods unending grace and mercy that just blares at me from the pages. How much He truly loves and longs for a relationship with His people. How much he protects them, loves them and provides for them and forgives them.

I’m still trucking along, but so thankful I can read the Word with you all! It’s been water in my soul and I have really established a habit and hunger for His Word.

    1. I love that this has also been water for your soul, Andrea. And yes, I love how you said His unending grace and mercy blares at you— I feel the same way!

Amy , I so enjoy how you word each weeks reading. Your words resonate so well with my heart.

I have learned this week that writing is a true need. I will start to journal these next reads and I will try to stay true to the reading and jot a note or two.

It seems like my life somewhat resembles some of the passages that we read because it has consisted of hospital stays, end of life decisions, and the miraculous hand of the Lord; all this has happened during the reading of Job.

God likes that I am pouring over His words and they are GOOD!

Nehemiah 2:4-5 So I prayed to the God of heaven and answered the (Doctor) King.
Then another good verse is Nehemiah 13:31

Job has always been a dreaded and dull read for me, but this time those words came to life!
Job 28:28 The fear of the Lord is this: wisdom. And to turn from evil is understanding.

    Then Job 38;22.
Job 28:18 The price of wisdom is beyond pearls.
Somehow, I had never seen some of the verses before, I had always focused on the sadness of the story.
Again God gave me something to focus on rather than what was going on around me.

And then in between was the book of Esther. A beautiful dramatic story of obedience, righteousness, and in the end, pure justice. I love it more each time I read it.

The reading plan seems to work for me too! Thank you so much for inviting me to read through the Bible with you. You have blessed my life greatly with the open invitation. Have a blessed day too!

    1. I love that His Word has been a solace to you as you are facing so much. I am praying for your strength and comfort and wisdom from Him as you are facing the things that are in your like. I am so thankful you are turning to Him and finding solace and joy.
Thank you for your encouragement. And thank you for reading with me. :)

  3. Thank you Amy for a nice reflection on our readings last week. I liked how you put it about finding treasure in the reading. I had a similar experience while reading Job this time. I was actually surprised that I did find “treasures’ there. I liked Job 22:21-30 and the Poem on Wisdom Chapter 28. In Nehemiah I love how he always turned to God with praise and how he gave God all the credit for his success. Esther is also a favorite of mine. A role model for us all.
I am looking forward to reading the Psalms again! Have a blessed week everyone!

    1. Thank you, Milly,
I love reading your comments and other, similar comments, too, on Job. It seems He is speaking to all of us, pulling us closer. :)
I am loving the Psalms this week, too– my pen is VERY busy!!! :) :)
