Making a Powerful, Prayerful SOAP Change

I’m planning to change my Bible reading schedule for a few months, which will impact my SOAP devotional. Since some of you may be reading with me, I thought I should alert you to the change.

I’ll still be using the SOAP format, I just won’t be using the Bible in a Year reading plan for awhile.

I will be taking my Bible reading and verses from The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian. I’m not following a set scripture schedule, I’m just going to do my best to listen as I work through the book.

Here’s what is going on:

I host a small women’s discussion/dinner/ prayer group in my home twice a month (most months) and until the end of September we are going to be working through this book together. I want to really delve into what the author has to say, and what the Holy Spirit wants me to hear, really spending time on the scriptures and praying through each chapter slowly.

I cannot tell you exactly how this will go. I just know that God will tell me what He wants me to hear and I will report on it.

I will journal here to share and more privately (and completely) in my own spiral notebook.

If you are interested, I’d love to encourage you to get a copy of the book and join me in this journey.

The book is more serious than I had expected. I bought it years ago on the suggestion of a neighbor. We thought we might go through it together. But we never did. I finally opened it up a few weeks ago after deciding to give it a go and invited my regular group and a few others to join me.

(Btw… if you are reading this and we are nearby face-to-face friends IRL and you’d like to come for the meetings, drop me a note. You’re invited!)

And for all my cyber sisters… if you’d like to follow the discussion online, I’ll likely post more than my SOAP posts about it, and I’d love to hear your input.

Here is our group reading schedule:

Each deadline/ discussion time covers about 50 pages of the book.

By July 21, we will have read the foreward through the end of chapter 2.

By August 18, we will have read chapters 3-10

By September 8, we will have read chapters 11-20

By September 22, we will have read chapters 21-30.

Starting September 23, I will be back on the Bible in a Year reading schedule.

As I mentioned, I am going to be using the scriptures in the book as a guideline for my SOAP. However, I am not making any guarantees for anything. My devotional time is not up to me. It’s up to me to show up, listen and let Him take me where He wants us to go.

And, like I said, I plan to discuss other observations through this process periodically. I wish I had the discipline to say I would post on a certain day each week, but past history has shown that I’m not too good at sticking to a blogging schedule. I do Tweet about my blog posts (among other things), so if you don’t check here daily, you could always follow me on Twitter to get alerts as to when and what I’ve posted.

I hope you’ll pray about it and consider joining me in this journey… either by reading the book on your own and commenting about it on my posts, or just by following along with my SOAP posts.

And thanks for your understanding as I change things up a bit. It’s hard to believe I’ve already journaled (and posted) through one pass at the entire Bible in a year!

  2. […] I typically use it with a Bible in one year reading plan, but you could use it with any reading plan or adapt it to fit in a study. […]

  3. […] And for those just joining us today, the remaining reading schedule I am following can be found here. […]

  5. I would love to join you on this!

I am just getting back into routine since moving, and of course I have not yet unpacked all my book boxes. I guess this is a good excuse to get out to the shed to look for this book!!
