Shopping Guide for Cuts of Beef

How many times have you found a great recipe and tried to shop for the right cut of beef only to be utterly confused in the meat department?

I thought I was the only clueless one until the Texas Beef Council enlightened me at a cooking demonstration last week.

I was chatting with one of the council representatives who explained that the same cut of beef often goes by different names at different grocery stores. How’s that for confusing!?

Fortunately, I found a great resource in The Healthy Beef Cookbook*, which the Council gave me to explore healthy beef recipes and share what I learn and enjoy with you.

My first gem to share is a FREE downloadable Shopping Guide for Cuts of Beef that I created from some of the information in the book.

This chart has already made a difference for me in shopping for beef. When I find a recipe I like, I use my handy dandy chart to find all the names for the cut of beef I need and hit the stores, ready to buy without being confused. (Well, at least not about what cut of beef to buy!)

Something else I learned was how nutrient-packed lean beef can be while still being low in fat and calories, when served in proper portions. I was shocked at how healthy the recipes in the cookbook were, as well as how low almost every single recipe was in Weight Watcher’s Points Plus values. But that’s another post for another day. I’ll be sure to share a few favorites!

Until then, download and print the chart or bookmark it on your computer. And venture into that meat department fearless!

Do you cook with beef? If so, what’s your favorite meal to prepare?

Very handy! Not to throw a bone in (couldn’t resist the pun), but what is a skirt steak? I’d heard of them and thought it was like flank, but saw one at the store today and it didn’t look like a flank steak.

You left off skirt steak, which I think falls under flank steak?

Yes I cook beef about once or twice a week. My husband loves to bbq a tri-tip. It has such wonderful flavor and, when you can find it, is cheaper than other roasts. Very few stores around here sell it though, I wonder if we’ve been passing over it because it goes by another name. Thanks for posting this.
