What are your favorite milkshakes and smoothies for kids?

My nine-year-old son, who is a skinny guy to begin with and has been told to gain weight, has just had a dental appliance put into his mouth that he finds rather uncomfortable.

Poor guy, he is even having trouble swallowing liquids. But today is just the first day, so I have no doubt things will get better.

In the meantime, though, I’d love to hear about your favorite smoothies and milkshakes… full fat varieties are welcomed and encouraged! Please leave links to recipes or leave full recipes in the comments. We need your help!

Help me give him something that makes him smile….

Thanks, in advance!!

    1. A handful of spinach can be thrown in with any other fruits. While the green will show through, the taste won’t.

    2. Throw in a scoop of protein powder, something like Dream Protein vanilla will add protein without seriously altering the flavor.

    3. Add home made Greek yogurt made with full fat milk for extra calorie/protein intake.

    4. Adding a tablespoon or two of coconut oil will add calories without greasiness too, not to mention boost the immune system.

My favorite smoothie is three bananas and a pint of strawberries, with a couple Tbls of water to help blend it up. If I’m feeling the need for greens, I’ll toss in a handful of spinach.

Or, when they are in season, a carton of raspberries blended with three bananas. YUM!

I wish your son luck with his dental treatments! Doesn’t sound like much fun.

My problem is filling the boys up!! They are endless pits. Today I tried adding some oatmeal (not cooked, though) to the blender, and I hope it does the trick!! I put some Greek yogurt in there, too, so I’m praying they stay full for a little while longer!

    Amy-
Make the smoothies with ice cream instead of yogurt. The sugar content in each is probably similar so that won’t matter, but there is more fat in ice cream.
We also used the Carnation instant breakfast packs. My kids LOVED them.

I also take our bananas that are about to go bad, peel them and stick them in a ziploc into the freezer. I never use any ice for our smoothies & definitely if you want to gain weight (which what a lovely problem that would be for me!!) then definitely don’t add ice to make it frozen… ice cream or whole milk or yogurt. I also freeze our yogurt cups and just plop them right in the blender!!

I just did this last week! I usually just toss the whole banana into the freezer, peel and all, however this time I took the 10 seconds to peel the banana. Duh! I’m looking forward to easier smoothie makin’!

    Your poor guy….

My doctor told me to give my son Carnation Instant Breakfast with his milk at meal times so he can out some pounds on. I also made him smoothies with juice (you can do yogurt), frozen fruit, and whey protein. You can also add any nut butters to smoothies/shakes. PB/J sandwiches are good way to put some pounds on, my son eats one for lunch everyday and my husband once told me that is what he was told to eat to gain weight for football in college. Fresh, natural Peanut butter is easy to make also. :)

    Hope that helps!

My kids all need to gain weight too, so I’m constantly trying to figure out how to add calories.

Our favorite smoothie recipe is plain yogurt (regular, not nonfat), a few bananas, frozen strawberries, frozen berries and some milk or 100% juice to make it drinkable. Then, I top it with a dollop of whipped cream.

    • Amy

Oh yeah, bring on the whipped cream!!
This is not going to be good for me (but excellent for my son!!)

Vanilla or chocolate ice cream with a super-ripe, frozen banana and a sprinkling of cinnamon and nutmeg.

Frozen mangos, strawberries, raspberries and pineapple (from a can but frozen to make the smoothie) with yogurt and a splash of OJ.

Have you tried adding whey protein powder? I find that vanilla-flavored protein powder disappears pretty well in smoothies.

Poor guy! Hope he learns to navigate quickly with the dental appliance – I had one that went across the roof of my mouth. It prepped me for braces, and I had to expand it with a little key everyday. I can identify with him!!

    • Amy

That’s exactly the appliance he has.
Thanks for the great ideas… and the protein powder idea!!

I hope he gets to feeling better soon. You can mix almost anything into a milkshake. We love various candy bars and things like m&m’s, but brownies and cookies mixed in also work well. Think oreo or one of his favorite cookies. You can blend it well to avoid the chunks. If he likes fruit, try a cheese cake milkshake. http://www.lynnskitchenadventures.com/2010/07/strawberry-cheesecake-milkshake.html

Another favorite in our house is homemade orange julius. So easy and so good. http://www.lynnskitchenadventures.com/2010/06/copycat-orange-julius.html
