Bible in 90 Days: Day 46 Check-in/

If you are participating in the Bible in 90 Days challenge, today you are on Day 46 and should have read through the end of page 552 in the Bible in 90 Days Bible or through Proverbs 20:21.

How’s it coming? And how is this experience shaping you?

This week Terrell shares his experiences in reading the Bible in 90 Days. You  might know Terrell from We Are THAT Family, where he and his wife Kristen have shared some of their very personal struggles in a powerful He Said/She Said series.

Here’s what he has to say about reading the Bible in 90 Days…

I’ve been a sporadic Bible reader for the past twenty six years, in spite of attending Bible College and Theological Seminary.  There just never seemed to be enough time.  I was consistently inconsistent.

I could tell you that at one time or another I have read every book in the Bible.  I could share how The Message paraphrase sparked a small flame of devotion to God’s word after I rededicated my life to Christ in 2005.

Quite honestly, though, there is no power in any of the previous testimony.  It’s like a fighter with a weak chin.  One hard upper cut to the face and he’s on the mat.  The fight is over.  Sadly, I am not alone in my weak, watered-down pursuit of God.

This type of pursuit is really no pursuit at all.  It’s more of a religion of convenience.  God is there if I need him, but most of the time I do pretty well on my own.  In August of this year I began to realize (I believe from the Holy Spirit)  that God wanted more than this from me.  More than apathy.  I started getting up every morning at six a.m. to read God’s word and think about what it said and how it applied to me.

I began to hunger for God to have more of my life. (My pet peeve is when people pray “God I want more of you.” It should be “God I want you to have more of me.”  Okay, I feel so much better now that I have that off my chest.  Whew!)  Not surprisingly, he answered my prayer.  I fell deeply in love with the One who became a sacrifice for my sin.

When I was introduced in early December to the concept of the Bible in 90 days,  I wondered if it was even feasible for me to complete such a large task, after all, I told myself, “I enjoy reading a chapter or two at a time and really letting it sink down into my heart.”

Amazingly, when you read this post, I will be over half-way through the Bible.  Every day has its challenges and I sometimes have to finish my reading later in the day or on my iPhone (there are a lot of great, amazing, Bible apps by the way).

What have I learned?  The words in this book are alive and real.  They penetrate into the very core of who I am (Hebrews 4:12).  I have a hunger pain in the deepest part of my being to be consumed by God.  I LOVE JESUS!!  He is so good, so real.  Some days I could just read His word all day.

Do I sound crazy?  I am crazy.  I willingly want to do whatever He asks of me.  I feel like the disciples who walked with Jesus, after His resurrection, on the road to Emmaus.  Luke 24:32, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us.”

I pray that your are experiencing this same phenomenon because the world already has plenty of “weak chin” Christians.

So what do you think? Is your heart burning or are you just making it through? And why do you think that is?

Please check in today either by linking to a post on your own blog or by leaving a comment. Even if your comment is a simple three-word progress report, please leave one. Just knowing you are part of our group is encouraging to the rest of us.

If you are looking for more insight, please consider listening to Jack Modesett Jr.’s week 7 audio message. His audio series is excellent.

And, of course, don’t forget to join us for our Tweet-Up tonight from 8-9 CST. Just follow me and use the #B90Days hashtag. Tonight we’ll go through the reading, day by day, and discuss passages that spoke out to us. Have your Bible nearby so you can share any observations you made.

I’d also like to get your input as to how this process is working or not working for you as I plan the next online session. We’ll discuss that tonight, as well.

I hope it’s been a good week for reading and listening for you. And I pray this experience is growing you away from being a ‘weak chin’ Christian.

  1. Still struggling but determined to not give up. I do not want to remain in the weak chin catagory. I do not do well on my own at all. I definitely need the Lord and want him to have much more of me. I am truly humbled by your comments Terrell. Thank you for sharing.

  2. My daughter and I are still on track. I never never ever want to go back to being a hit or miss, on and off (mostly off) Bible reader. From now on I want to continue to read every day like I have for the last 47 days. What a blessing.

  3. I am still plugging along – on track for my revised 100 day plan. :)
Although Chronicles is much of a repeat of Kings, it still amazes me “he did evil in the eyes of the Lord, the same as his father” or “he did good and what was right…”.
My prayer is that I (and my children) would be found to be the ones that did good and what was right in God’s sight.

  4. I love Ecclesiastes. So much doom and gloom and depression…and then the nuggets of wisdom: Eat! Drink! Enjoy life! Remember your Creator!

Oh my am I still behind. I will get done with the rest of you, but wow. It was interesting in bible study today – the theme was to have the Holy Spirit dwelling in you, you must know and obey the Word – that is how you show love to Jesus.

To obey the Word, you have to know the word.
To know the Word, you have to be IN the word.
To be in the Word, you have to be reading DAILY!

And there – is my humbling of the day.

  6. I posted to McLinky too, but wanted to comment out here as well. I am on Day 34, I’ve had a LOT that got in the way for me, but I am NOT giving up. I am going to work to catch up.

This week is a quiet week in terms of “life” I hope. Only one appointment. So I should be able to catch up more around work.

  7. It’s now Tuesday 2/16. I just finished reading Day 40. I’ve slipped to 7 days behind. It’s been a struggle to read this week because with all the snow the kids have been home all day everyday! Finding a big chunk of time to read attentively has been difficult. But, I’m not giving up! The snow will melt eventually and I’ll be able to get more big chunks in and do some catching up.

  8. I am still one day behind but within the grace period. Because of “life” this has been harder lately but I was very encouraged this week when I hit halfway. I’m pushing forward but hope it can penetrate my heart more like it is for Terrell as I continue on. Sorry I missed the tweet up and will again next week but hopefully I’ll be able to continue on anyway and join in on the chat in a couple of weeks when things settle down. Thanks!

  11. What a very convicting post. I was over 2 days behind, but after reading the guest post I decided to put more effort into my reading and now am just 1 day behind. I will make sure I catch up tomorrow!

I feel like I need to search for my thinking cap for the last few books of the OT!!! It will be hard taking all of that in with how much we have to read a day!

  14. Hi! For those of you who don’t know, I’m the agnostic in the group. I was inspired to do this because I realized I had never read the bible and how can you discuss or dissect something you’ve never read right? It’s been good, and although I’ve accepted being persistently behind everyone, I’ve enjoyed the ride.

Right now I’m downloading the BBC Documentary about the history of Christianity. I’ve developed a keen interest in the history so I’ll let you know what I think.

Thanks for being so patient with me. I’m definitely on a journey and exploring some things very different from what I’ve always known/thought.

  21. I am still behind, but not giving up! This post was the kick in the pants that I needed I believe. I do not have my priorities right, not just with the reading but in my life as well! I want to get on track! Please pray for me that this will happen sooner than later! I know what needs to be done and I am committed to doing it! Thanks so much for all the encouragement!

  23. After getting briefly behind I am all caught up and truly being blessed by this experience! More so that I ever expected! I also got HUGELY blessed to receive my scholarship materials from biblein90days.org this week, which I totally wasn’t expecting and was such a wonderful surprise! Hoping to make it to the meeting tonight!

  24. I’m on track. Finished today’s reading after working out but before picking the kids up from the gym’s play center :). Don’t have time for a blog post today, plus I’m still thinking about it.

Hope to be at the chat, but I’m grading madly at the moment.

  25. Caught up … so many things to say. Glad we’re almost through the poetic literature … give me some prophets!! I’m ready. The last week has been the biggest struggle for me. I feel like I’m reading the same thing OVER and OVER in the Psalms. I GET IT!!! {Sadly, I admit that as I am in the process of writing with my husband a book of devotions on the Psalms. God has a major sense of humor!}

  26. Wow! What powerful words! I too have struggled with “convenient Christianity” for many years, which I think is often a side-effect of being raised in church and a Christian school. It often becomes too commonplace to truly be appreciated. Our pastor preached a message yesterday about regaining your passion for the Gospel – to share it and to claim it every day of your life! I hope to integrate that passion into my daily life as well as my reading schedule! Still trying to get caught up from the crazy Blissdom week, but still moving forward! :)

  27. I just finished posting my long-overdue blog update. I am in the middle of yesterday’s reading. So close to being fully caught up! I have been enjoying this, and have at least some sort of insight every day. I’ve been missing the tweet-ups. Perhaps I will make it tonight. I don’t know.

  28. I am so grateful to God for the time I am spending in His Living Word. I am reading and listening on Biblegateway.com . The combination of audio/visual is so great for me. I didn’t want to tell anybody that I was doing this because I was afraid to fail, but it is a blessing to tell of God’s wonderful grace and the power of His Word. The reach of this challenge is hard to fathom.

Just checking in about a day behind and still need to read todays hoping to make the tweetup tonight! I hope everyone is feeling encouraged this week as I have struggled through Psalms I found a verse that truly stuck out to me Psalms 73:26 “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” How often we don’t allow him to be our portion to be enough for us to lean on! May we all remember to lean on Him as we finish the last half of His word!

  30. I am caught up and on track! Psalms and Proverbs have been such an encouragment. So many of the Psalms reminded me of praise songs that I have learned through the years.

  31. Hi Amy! Just checking in to let you know David and I are still caught and still loving our time of reading each day. Being on the west coast, we miss out on the Twitter Mondays (It is dinner time here when you all are meeting.), but we still love to read your posts and others’ comments.

Thank you for posting Terrell’s words; I could feel his love and enthusiasm for Jesus leaping through the page!!! :)

Hollie: If you happen to read this, please know I will be praying for you today!

  32. Have you ever been discouraged? Feeling a bit alone..that is where I am at today. UGH…I posted a linky but I am seriously asking for prayer because I need to remain open to God working in me through it all.

  33. I’m “caught up”, although I’m a month behind most everyone here. I started on 2/1/10, and have really enjoyed it, even Leviticus. ;)

I love God’s Word–seeing the big picture so quickly is a great thing in this 90 days–it’s good to sit with Him each day and hear what He says.

    Blessings.

  35. honestly I discovered that through Psalms, as well as in the first couple of books in the Bible, I enjoyed reading and made it a priority, but through the histories (kings and chronicles) I didn’t always make it a priority because I didn’t enjoy it as much, this revelation can be true in my life, life good and easy I make God priority, when things bad, or hard, I don’t.

  37. I’am 1 day behind. I will use valentines, chinese new year and baptismal of my nephew as an excuse. :)

Regarding your question – I want my heart to burn for God. It is my prayer that God will fill me with His Holy Spirit before the end of this challenge. I longed for God’s presence, I longed to be used by God for His purpose and glory.

  38. With tears streaming down my face by the conviction in Terrell’s post, I am ashamed. I have simply not been making this a priority in the last two weeks and it shows by the fact that I have fallen behind again. I just wrote my post where I make excuses for why I am behind and then come here to read this and am reminded that there is no where more important for me to be than at the feet of Jesus, soaking up His word. That is where I will be today. Thank you so much for keeping me on track!
